Ward's OT Strike Lifts Bullets Over Cabrini
from press release
RADNOR, Pa. – Senior J.C. Ward (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) scored the game-winning goal with 3:20 left in the second overtime and No. 18 Gettysburg pulled out a 9-8 victory over 15th-ranked Cabrini College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's lacrosse tilt.
The Bullets (4-3) trailed just once on the afternoon after jumping to a 3-0 first-quarter lead, but the rest of the game featured five ties.
Ward finished with two goals and one assist to lead a balanced Gettysburg offensive effort. Senior Danno Lynch (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms [Conn.]) and junior Pat Sartory (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) added two goals apiece while senior Chris Cahill (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) contributed one goal and one assist.
Gettysburg's defense held an opponent to a single-digit goal total for the seventh straight game to start the season. Sophomore J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep.) finished with a career-high 14 saves for the Bullets, who killed six of their seven penalties.
Jeff Crosby scored three goals to lead Cabrini (2-3), and he forced overtime when he scored with 1:38 left in regulation. Bobby Thorp tacked on two goals while Paul Skulski dished out a pair of assists.
After freshman Wes Lincoln (McLean, Va./Landon [Md.]) won the face-off to start the second OT, the Bullets called timeout with 3:29 left. Nine seconds later, Ward drove hard down the right side of the field before letting it rip from 10 yards out to give Gettysburg its first overtime victory since an 8-7 win over Denison University in the quarterfinals of the 2008 NCAA Division III tournament.
Lincoln took the Bullets face-offs starting in the second half and finished 8-for-14. Overall, the teams split their 22 face-offs.
Gettysburg broke open a scoreless game with 4:48 left in the opening quarter when Lynch scored his first goal. Ward set up a Sartory tally with 1:58 to go, then scored himself with 29 ticks showing to give the Bullets their 3-0 first-quarter lead.
Cabrini came back with three unanswered goals in the second quarter to make it a 3-3 game at the half, with Crosby sandwiching a pair of goals around a Thorp marker.
The Bullets reclaimed the lead in the third quarter, when senior Andrew Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School [Conn.]) and Cahill scored early in the period to make it 5-3. But the Cavaliers answered again, this time on goals from Matt Biegel and Thorp, to tie it 5-5 and set up a thrilling fourth quarter.
Sartory rifled a shot into the upper-right corner off a Cahill feed to put the Bullets up 6-5, but Cabrini took its first lead of the game after a Brian Hill goal and a Joe Hughes tally in transition with 4:42 left. But Gettysburg cashed in for its second man-up goal of the game when Lynch accepted a Tyler Feeley (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School) pass from up top and scored in front to tie it 7-7 with 2:53 on the clock.
Freshman Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) gave the Bullets back the lead with 1:44 remaining, scooping up a loose ball in front of the cage and burying a shot to make it 8-7. But on the ensuing face-off, Mike Gurenlian won it, picked up the ground ball, and hit Crosby in transition for his game-tying goal.
Gettysburg plays its third ranked opponent is as many games on Saturday, when it hosts seventh-ranked Haverford College at 1 p.m. in its Centennial Conference (CC) opener and a rematch of last season's CC championship game.
