Salisbury Men to Have Three Games on TV
from press release
SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 3-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team's 2011 schedule will feature three games that will be broadcast on WMAR-TV/ABC 2 out of Baltimore and ESPN3.
The Sea Gulls' games against Gettysburg College (March 5 at 1 p.m.), Stevenson University (April 16 at noon) and at Washington (Md.) College (May 7 at 1 p.m.) will be broadcast live.
"This is another way to give us further exposure, not only to our lacrosse program but to the University," said SU 23rd year head coach Jim Berkman. "It's always good to give your kids a chance to play on television because it is exciting and it's a chance to showcase the great players and the great program that we have."
The meeting against Gettysburg will be the 27th meeting between the two programs. It has grown into one of the top non-conference games each season, as the last three contests have featured an 11-10 final score line. Additionally, current Gettysburg coach Hank Janczyk was the head coach at SU from 1983-85, posting a 33-12 record in three seasons. The game will feature the two all-time winningest coaches in NCAA men's lacrosse history in Berkman and Janczyk. Berkman enters the season with 367 wins while Janczyk has won 345 games.
The contest against Stevenson marks the 10th meeting between the two Capital Athletic Conference members. The series has heated up in the last seven meetings, as the games have been pivotal regular season, conference championship and NCAA tournament contests. The Sea Gulls advanced to the program's 12th national championship game in 2010 after defeating the Mustangs 14-13 in the NCAA semifinals on May 23.
The annual Eastern-Shore rivalry between Washington and Salisbury returns for its 44th overall meeting. The game is the longest running series in Salisbury program history, with SU holding a 24-19 advantage in the series. Salisbury has won the last 10 meetings, including last year's 12-7 victory in the annual "War on the Shore" contest. The winner of the contest receives the Charles B. Clark Cup, named in honor of Clark, who spent time at each institution as an educator and men's lacrosse coach.
The Sea Gulls are set to kickoff the 2011 campaign at home against Greensboro College on Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
