Both the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
and the Centennial Conference sent three representatives to the
23-team NCAA Men’s Division III tournament when the bids were
announced on Sunday evening.
Middlebury and Connecticut College (14-2) joined automatic
qualifier Tufts (16-1) from the NESCAC while Gettysburg (15-2) and
Dickinson (14-2) hitched up with AQ-winner Haverford
(11-5) from the Centennial. The only other conference to send
multiple teams was the Capital, which will have Salisbury (18-1)
and Stevenson (17-1) in the brackets.
The first round of games will start on Wednesday, May 12.
The committee seemingly turned a blind eye to travel concerns in
the first round, sending Goucher to Middlebury on Wednesday, as
well as sending Widener to Springfield.
Perhaps the lone surprise of the field was the omission of Colorado
College, which had a better record and a head-to-head win over
Wittenberg, but watched as the NCAC swept the Pool B bids when
Denison, Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg earned the nod.
