Lynchburg Bests Sydney; Roanoke Next
from press release
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The 10th-ranked Lynchburg College men's
lacrosse team opened a late six-goal lead and hung on for a 10-7
victory over Hampden-Sydney College in the semifinals of the Old
Dominion Athletic conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Hornets advance
to face top-seed Roanoke College in Salem, VA next weekend in the
title game, as the Maroons defeated Washington & Lee University
15-7 in the day's other semifinal game.
The Hornets, the second-seed in the six team tourney, opened a 3-1
lead with 4:21 remaining in the second period, but the Tigers found
the back of the net twice to even the score at three all. LC netted
a tally right before intermission and added five consecutive scores
to extend the advantage to 9-3 early in the fourth quarter. The
teams exchanged goals and the Tigers threatened late with
three-straight goals, but could get no closer.
Austin Jeter (pictured - Chester Springs, PA/Downington East) and
Ben Sauer (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) each scored three times for the
Hornets. Eddie Bilinkas (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) netted two goals
and Max Voumard (Cape May, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) had a goal and an
assist. Franc Cook (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) was sharp in net for
LC, making 14 saves. LC had a slim edge in shots (36-35) while the
Tigers had a small advantage in groundballs (35-34).
Micah Keller and Ben Clarke scored twice for Hampden-Sydney (13-5)
and Cole Hawthorne had a goal and an assist. Brad Mostowy won 12 of
his 19 face-off attempts for the Tigers.
The Hornets (13-4) look to avenge an earlier 15-7 loss at Roanoke
College and take home their fourth ODAC title next weekend. Further
championship details will be announced early this week.
