Still Going: Fisher Handles Stevens Easily

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher
College men’s lacrosse team picked up a key win today, as the
No. 13 Cardinals downed No. 21 Stevens Institute of Technology 14-8
on Saturday at Fisher’s Growney Stadium.
With the win, Fisher improves to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the Empire
8 Conference. Fisher, now one of only four undefeated teams in the
country, has won a College-record 11 straight games and is off to
the best start in the program’s nine-year history.
Fisher’s Erich Rassow won 19-of-25 faceoffs to
lead the Cardinals. He also finished with a team-best nine ground
balls. Senior goalie Jon Cortina stopped nine shots in
net, including four in the fourth quarter, to earn the win.
Junior Ryan Schmidt totaled a team-best five points on
three goals and two assists. Sophomore Kyle Denhoff led
Fisher with four goals, while Dave Malone finished with
four points on two goals and two assists.
Christ Schmidt collected three points on one goal and two assists.
Mitch Ritchie added two goals, while Mike
Cummins chipped in with one goal and one assist. Senior
Jeff Price also scored in the win.
Fisher jumped out to a 3-0 lead during the game’s opening
5:07, but the Ducks scored with 35 seconds left in the first
quarter and trailed 3-1 after one.
In the second quarter, Fisher pushed its lead to 4-1, as senior
Chris Schmidt scored off a pass from Malone. Stevens,
however, would score the game’s next four goals and took its
only lead of the game at 5-4 with 9:54 left in the third quarter on
Nicolas Phillipi’s third goal of the game.
The lead was short-lived for the Ducks. Fisher scored three goals
in a 3:01 span, including two from Denhoff, and led 7-5 with 5:44
left in the third.
After a Stevens goal made it 7-6, Fisher scored the next three
goals to regain command and kept a three-goal lead for the final
nine minutes.
Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and will host
Rochester Institute of Technology. The Tigers are ranked No. 14 in
the latest USILA poll.
