from press release
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Pat Sartory (Ellicott
City, Md./McDonogh School) scored a career-high four goals and
handed out one assist while senior Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter
Johnson) scored his 200th career point as No. 2 Gettysburg used a
fast start to hold off Ursinus College 13-11 in a Centennial
Conference men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at
Musselman Stadium.
The Bullets (12-1, 6-0 CC), who clinched a Centennial Conference
playoff berth, jumped out to a 9-2 lead, only to see Ursinus go on
a 6-1 run spanning the second and third quarters to get back into
it. The Bears (8-3, 3-3 CC) pulled to within two on four occasions
but were unable to get any closer.
With two Centennial Conference regular season games remaining, the
Bullet can clinch the regular season title and the right to host
the conference playoffs with a win or a Dickinson loss.
Brody reached his milestone early in the second quarter, when he
scored his lone goal of the game. He finished the day with 200
points even and is now tied with Keith Fleming '90 for fifth on
Gettysburg's career points list.
Senior Josh Reichert (Englewood, Colo./Kent School) added three
goals while classmate Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph)
recorded two goals and two assists for the Bullets. Junior Andrew
Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School [Conn.]) notched a pair
of goals, and senior Patrick Koehl (Shamong, N.J./St. Joseph's
[Pa.]) had one goal and one assist.
Eric Ocampo led Ursinus with three goals and one assist while Eric
Farris and David Kraus scored three goals apiece. Tom Walsh
contributed a goal and two assists.
Ryan Reuther won 15-of-18 face-offs for the Bears, who lost nine of
their first 11 at the X before winning 14 of their final 17.
The Bullets never trailed after scoring the game's first four
goals, with three coming inside the first five minutes. Walsh put
the Bears on the scoreboard when he scored with 4:55 left in the
opening quarter, but McGrath answered with his second goal,
striking with 2:04 to make it 5-1 at the end of the first
quarter.
Kraus scored the first goal of the second quarter, but Gettysburg
reeled off the next four tallies to assume their 9-2 advantage.
However, the Bears answered with four goals of their own, with
Farris accounting for three during the stretch, to cut the deficit
to 9-6. Sartory stemmed the rally with he scored 13 seconds before
the buzzer, giving the Bullets a 10-6 lead at the intermission.
The Bears continued to chip away at the deficit in the second half
and outscored the Bullets 3-1 in the third quarter. Ursinus made it
10-8 following an Ocampo goal with 12:07 left before Ryan answered
for Gettysburg. Pat Gillen struck with 2:19 left in the quarter,
making it an 11-9 contest heading into the final period.
Neither team would score in the opening eight minutes of the fourth
quarter, and the two teams traded goals the rest of the way.
Reichert and Sartory sandwiched goals around an Ocampo tally, who
cut it to 12-10 with 6:12 on the clock. Sartory found the back of
the net with 5:36 showing to make it 13-10 before Kraus set the
final score with 1:53 left.
Sophomore John LeClerc (Acton, Mass./Tilton School [N.H.]) finished
with eight saves for the Bullets while Matt Columbini stopped six
shots and yielded eight goals while playing the final three
quarters for Ursinus. T.J. Magnani started and gave up the first
five goals while making two saves.
Gettysburg returns home on Saturday, when it hosts Centennial
