from press release
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Amherst College men's lacrosse team
had its three-game win streak snapped this afternoon with a 14-6
loss to 12th-ranked Middlebury College on the road. With the loss,
Amherst falls to 3-4 overall, and 2-3 in the NESCAC. The Panthers
improve to 5-2 (3-2 NESCAC) with the win. Middlebury out-scored
Amherst 5-1 in the opening quarter, and wasted no time getting
started. After winning the game's opening face-off, the Panthers
scored just 16 seconds into the game as Pete Smith found Brian
Foster for a goal. One minute later, Smith set up Jack Masur for a
score to put the Panthers up 2-0.
Neither team scored for nearly ten minutes, before Amherst
sophomore Evan Redwood (Lutherville, MD) assisted on a score by
senior tri-captain Tom McDonnell (Manhasset, NY). With the margin
cut in half, Middlebury responded with three goals in the final
2:20 of the first period to take control.
The Panthers scored the first two goals of the second quarter to
stretch their lead to 7-1. Amherst sophomore Dan Routh (Allendale,
NJ) assisted on another McDonnell goal with 4:42 to play in the
second quarter.
Redwood added an unassisted goal with 1:50 to play before halftime,
closing the gap to 8-3, but Amherst would never get any closer than
five goals. Sophomore Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) scored Amherst's
only goal of the third quarter on a feed from rookie Ramsey Bates
(McLean, VA).
Routh scored a pair of goals to start and finish the scoring in the
fourth frame for Amherst, but the Panthers tacked on a trio of
scores in between. Routh finished the game with a pair of scores
and an assist, while McDonnell had a pair of scores, and Redwood
chipped in with a goal and an assist. The Panthers were paced by
Smith's two goals and three assists in the win.
Amherst won 13 of the game's 22 face-offs, and was out-shot by
Middlebury just 22-20, but could not beat Panther goalie Ryan Deane
enough to hang in the game. Deane finished the day with 12 saves in
54:16, before giving way to Charles Ward (5:44, 2 saves) in net.
Amherst's Sam Jakimo (Woodburym, NY) made eight saves between the
pipes, taking his first loss of the year (1-3).
