No. 1 Gettysburg Holds Off No. 14 Haverford

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Gettysburg got out to a quick start, then held off a Haverford rally as the top-ranked Bullets won their Centennial Conference opener with a 10-9 victory over the 14th-ranked Fords in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams at a rainy Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was
rescheduled due to inclement weather.
The Bullets, who stayed undefeated (6-0, 1-0 CC) on the season and
won their 19th straight home game, received a hat trick from senior
Joe Brody, who scored three goals and dished out one assist.
Sophomore Pat Sartory and senior Kyle McGrath scored two goals
apiece while junior Chris Cahill had one goal and two assists.
Junior Matt Griffo tied a career-high for face-off wins, finishing
10-for-18 while picking up a career-high nine ground balls for the
Bullets.
Haverford (3-2, 0-1 CC) was led by junior Max Hjelm, who scored
four goals and handed out one assist. Junior Myles Monaghan had two
goals and one assist while senior Andrew Kim had one goal and two
assists. Sophomore Zach Cohen distributed two assists for the
Fords, who outshot the Bullets 21-11 in the second half after being
outshot 21-9 in the opening half. Sophomore goalie Joe Banno
finished with 10 saves.
Trailing 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter, Haverford turned up
the pressure, outshooting the Bullets 11-2 and forcing nine
turnovers. Hjelm scored the only goal in the period, taking a pass
from sophomore Phillip Valiant and blasting home a straightaway
shot with the Fords a man up. Haverford had plenty of opportunities
to tie it, taking five shots the rest of the way, but sophomore
goalie John LeClerc made four of his eight saves in the fourth
quarter, with three coming inside the last 3:55.
LeClerc made his final save with 1:06 on the clock, stopping a low
shot from Travis Gregory. A series of three straight turnovers
ensued, and Haverford came up with the ball after a big hit from
sophomore defenseman Dillon Hamill with 40 seconds left. The Fords
raced it upfield before calling timeout with 27 ticks showing.
Haverford was unable to capitalize however, as Cohen threw the ball
away from behind the net, looking for a cutting Hjelm. After the
Bullets cleared it, the Fords forced one more turnover deep in
their own territory, but time expired as defenseman Matt Dooley
launched the ball well short of the Gettysburg goal.
Gettysburg bolted out to a 3-0 lead over the game’s first six
minutes, getting goals from McGrath, Sartory, and Cahill. Gregory
put the Fords on the scoreboard with 6:21 left in the first
quarter, before junior Danno Lynch struck with 2:58 on the clock to
make it a 4-1 game at the end of the first quarter. The Bullets
outshot Haverford 14-1 in the opening 15 minutes and forced seven
turnovers.
Hjelm notched his first goal 1:56 into the second quarter before
the Bullets scored three quick goals over a 1:40 span to take their
largest lead of the day at 7-2 with 10:35 to go in the first half.
Brody, junior Andrew Ryan, and McGrath all scored during the
stretch for the Bullets.
Haverford picked up its play over the remainder of the half,
however, outscoring Gettysburg 4-1 the rest of the way to cut the
deficit to 8-6 heading into the locker room. After a Jason Leeds
goal with 8:53 left, Monaghan converted six seconds later off a
face-off. After a Brody goal, Hjelm and Monaghan scored inside the
final four minutes of the half.
Brody extended Gettysburg’s advantage to 9-6 when he scored
with 8:12 left in the third quarter for his fourth hat trick in six
games this season. After goals from Hjelm and Kim cut the gap to
9-8, Sartory posted the Bullets final tally, scoring off a Cahill
feed with 1:48 left in third quarter to make it 10-8 heading into
the final period.
Gettysburg continues its season on Wednesday, when it travels to
No. 18 Cabrini College for a non-conference affair starting at 3:30
p.m.
