Say What? Dickinson Stuns No. 3 Roanoke
from press release
SALEM, Va. - Dickinson upset No. 3 Roanoke, 7-6, at Kerr
Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Maroons to 5-1
overall, 1-0 in the ODAC. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0 on the
season.
In the Maroons' first regular season loss since the 2008 season,
they were held to under seven goals in a game since 2007. It is the
third one-goal decision in four meetings, as the Maroons hold a 4-2
series advantage.
In a low-scoring affair, the game went into halftime with Roanoke
up, 2-1. Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley
High School)got the Maroons on the board first with 9:37 left
in the opening period. Dickinson answered with a goal just
over a minute later to tie the game. Nike/Inside Lacrosse
Division III Player of the Week, Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario,
Canada, Kitchener Braves), scored just before the first
quarter came to an end to take a 2-1 lead.
Roanoke came out in the second half and scored three-straight goals
to take a 5-1 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. After
a Dickinson hard hit to Steve Furdock (Birmingham, MI,
Birmingham Seaholm)caused a Red Dragons penalty, the senior
attack got revenge with a man-up goal from Keeley to give them a
3-1 advantage with 8:25 in the third period. Back-to-back
goals from both Ashton Hotchkiss (Darien, CT, Darien)and
Quinton within a minute increased the Maroons lead to four, 5-1
heading into the final period.
Dickinson roared back in the fourth quarter, scoring a season-best
six fourth-quarter goals to rally from a four-goal deficit to
remain undefeated.
Quinton finished with two goals, giving him 20 on the
season. He moved into 20th on the career scoring
list (142pts) and is currently 12th on the career goals
list (112). Keeley and Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ,
Chatham)each tallied a goal and an
assist. Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St.
Joseph)made 13 saves to move into sixth on the all-time saves
list (534) and remained tied with Bill Pilat ’85 for most
wins by a goalie at Roanoke (40). He also picked up four
groundballs. Alex Burkhead (Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth
Country Day)and Pat March (Glen Burnie, MD, Mt. St.
Joseph)collected four groundballs.
The Maroons outshot the Red Devils 39-30, including a sizable 14-5
advantage in the third with six shots coming off the post in the
game. Roanoke recorded more groundballs (36-28), but
were plagued by only one goal in eight extra-man opportunities. The
most recognizable failed opportunity came in the final minute of
play when they had a chance to send the game into overtime.
Dickinson won more face-offs (10) than the Maroons (5), and
is the first team to record more than Roanoke since Washington
& Lee last season.
Dickinson was led by Matt Cherry who posted a goal and two assists.
Pat Curley added in two goals, both coming in the fourth
quarter. The Red Devils’ leading scorer, Chris Dodson,
tallied one goal, including six shots. Tyler Magann got the win for
Dickinson in net, making 11 saves. Of the 11 stops, 10 of
came in the first half. Chip Murray won 10-of-15 face-offs, while
Brandon Palladino collected a game-high five groundballs for
Dickinson.
The Maroons will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they
host Kenyon at Donald J. Kerr Stadium. Roanoke beat Kenyon
last year 20-12, and is 2-1 all-time against the Lords. Faceoff is
scheduled for 4 p.m.
