Fourth-ranked Gulls Trounce Bishops
from press release
SALISBURY, Md. – Two days of nearly non-stop rain
didn't stop the No. 4 ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse
team from hosting No. 15 ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on
Saturday afternoon. The Sea Gulls shot out of the gates, scoring
two goals in the first two minutes of play, and never looked back
as they rolled past the Battling Bishops 15-6.
Salisbury's accuracy was on point, as the first five shots ripped
by Sea Gulls (6-0) all resulted in goals; in the first quarter, the
maroon and gold scored eight goals on nine shots. Senior attackman
Mike Winter (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the Sea Gull charge by
netting three goals in the first quarter alone, including a
behind-the-back shot that flew past Bishop goalkeeper Jud Hall. The
Bishops (2-2) didn't get on the board until the second quarter with
10:49 remaining on the clock as Ohio Wesleyan attackman Shaun Crow
scored his team's first and only goal of the half.
The second half was more of the same for Salisbury, whose
impenetrable defense allowed only 13 shots on the day for the
Bishops. Sophomore midfielder Sam Bradman (Canton, N.Y.), who
scored two goals in the first half, netted Salisbury's 11th and
12th goals in the third quarter and finished with a team-high seven
points on four goals and three assists. Eight different Sea Gulls
scored goals in the victory, including sophomore midfielder Jeff
McGuire (Millersville, Md.), who netted his first career goal in
the fourth quarter with just 1:31 left to play.
In between the pipes, three different Sea Gulls saw playing time:
junior Johnny Rodriguez (Gambrills, Md.) earned the win as he
played the entire first half and was forced to make only one save.
The other two goalkeepers, junior Tim Swinburn (Swarthmore, Pa.)
and freshman Mitch Meredith (Annapolis, Md.) made a combined three
saves in the second half to preserve Salisbury's significant margin
of victory. Salisbury fired off 44 shots in the win.
Salisbury's next contest will be this Wednesday as the Sea Gulls
host The College of Wooster in their first night game of the
season. The first face-off is set for 7 p.m.
