No. 8 W&L Closes Door on No. 15 OWU
from press release
LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior midfielder Drew Koeneman
(St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) scored four goals and senior attackman Will
Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) notched one goal and four assists to
lead the eighth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a
9-5 victory over 15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday evening at
Wilson Field.
Koeneman gave the Generals (6-0) a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in
the opening 4:50 of the game, but a pair of OWU (2-1) goals
sandwiched around a man-up tally by first-year attackman Mac Means
(Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) off a Keigler feed made it a 3-2 W&L
lead after the first period. Another Means man-up goal from Keigler
gave W&L a 4-2 edge heading into halftime.
The Battling Bishops climbed to within 4-3 on an unassisted goal by
senior attackman Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) at
11:29 of the third period, but the Generals scored a pair of goals
46 seconds apart, one by Koeneman and another by sophomore
attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) at
4:06 for a 6-3 lead. Ohio Wesleyan responded with a two-goal run of
its own on tallies by Young (3:40) and senior midfielder Andy
Princehorn (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) at 2:40 to make
it a one-goal game at 6-5.
Keigler gave W&L a 7-5 lead on an unassisted goal just eight
seconds before the end of the third period and he then assisted on
a man-up goal by senior midfielder Max Mancuso (Northport,
N.Y./Northport) for an 8-5 lead with 12:17 remaining. Koeneman
added another tally at the 5:20 mark for the final margin.
Means chipped in a pair of goals and Meehan had one goal and one
assist to supplement the offense provided by Keigler and Koeneman.
The Generals' defense was again stellar, led by first-year
defensman Joe LaSala's (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) three caused
turnovers and five saves from senior goalkeeper Matt Mason
(Gladwyne, Pa./St. Mark's), who played all 60 minutes.
Young paced the Battling Bishops with three goals, while Princehorn
and senior attackman Gavin Cunningham (Rye, N.Y./Rye) both scored a
single goal. Junior Jud Hall (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington)
played all 60 minutes between the pipes and registered 10
saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to
Franklin & Marshall for a 3:00 pm contest.
