No. 19 St. Lawrence Upends No. 8 'Fords
from press release
MANHASSET, N.Y. - The St. Lawrence University men's
lacrosse team, ranked 19th in the national polls, used a six-goal
second half to stun No. 8 Haverford by the score of 8-6 in the 2010
season opener at Manhasset High School in Long Island, NY on
Saturday afternoon.
The victory gave St. Lawrence (1-0) redemption, as the Fords
defeated the Saints 9-8 in overtime to begin the 2009 campaign. The
loss was Haverford's first of the year and sent the team to
2-1.
"It was a tremendous team-win against an outstanding squad," said
St. Lawrence head coach Mike Mahoney. "(Haverford) had some
opportunities to expand its lead in the first half, but we hung in
there and delivered a solid performance in the second. Overall, I'm
proud of the way we battled and kept our composure."
Haverford built a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Saints
responded with two man-up goals in the second to pull to within 3-2
after 30 minutes. Sophomores Kyle Jacobsen and Caldwell Rohrbach
got St. Lawrence's offense going with a goal each in the second
quarter.
Though the Fords extended their lead back to two at 4-2 a mere 50
seconds into the third quarter, the Scarlet and Brown would rattle
off four consecutive goals to take a 6-4 advantage. Rohrbach scored
his second of the game while senior captain Scott Smith and
sophomore Peter Carpenter also got into the scoring in the third to
give Coach Mahoney's team a narrow 5-4 lead after three
quarters.
Senior captain John Manning capped the four-goal run nearly four
minutes into the final frame to put his team on top 6-4. Though
Haverford would cut its deficit to one at 6-5, sophomore Matt Pope
and Jacobsen would deliver clutch goals with nearly six minutes
left to put St. Lawrence ahead 8-5.
Despite the Fords' offensive efforts, they were only able to come
up with one goal in the final minutes to cap the scoring at
8-6.
Senior goalie Andrew Cochran made 11 saves for the Scarlet and
Brown and improved to 2-0 in his career, while Joe Banno suffered
the loss for Haverford despite making 13 stops. St. Lawrence
finished with a 32-29 advantage in shots and was 2-of-7 on man-up
tries. The Saints also showed great discipline in the season
opener, taking only one penalty and holding the Fords 0-for-1 on
the man-up try.
With the victory, the Saints will head west to San Diego, CA where
they will square off with Whittier College and Drew University
during St. Lawrence's spring vacation. The Scarlet and Brown will
play at Whittier on Wednesday, March 10 at 4:00pm then against Drew
on Saturday, March 13 at 1:00pm.
