No. 3 Gettysburg Breezes Past Goucher
from press release
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Junior Danno Lynch (Medfield, Mass./Avon
Old Farms) scored four goals and senior Joe Brody (Bethesda,
Md./Walter Johnson), senior Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph),
and junior Andrew Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School
[Conn.]) added three goals apiece as No. 3 Gettysburg downed
Goucher College 16-6 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game
Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg (3-0), which pushed its home winning streak to 17, led
9-3 at halftime and ended the game on a 6-1 run after Goucher (0-2)
had closed to within 10-5 late in the third quarter.
The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Brody, who also had an assist, broke into Gettysburg's career
top-10 scoring list. He now has 172 points for his career, placing
him in a tie for 10th with Chase Stewart '06. With 114 career
goals, he is just two shy of breaking into the top-10 of that
category as well.
Junior Chris Cahill (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and
freshman Evan Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) added one goal and two
assists apiece for the Bullets while junior J.C. Ward (Setauket,
N.Y./Ward Melville) contributed a pair of helpers.
Sophomore John LeClerc (Acton, Mass./Tilton School [N.H.]) made a
season-high seven saves in picking up the win for Gettysburg while
classmate Lucien Reichert (Englewood, Colo./Kent School) stopped
three shots in just 5:34. Freshman J.T. McCook (Miami,
Fla./Gulliver Prep) made his collegiate debut between the pipes,
playing the final 2:05.
Goucher was led by sophomore Rory Averett, who scored three goals,
while sophomore Matt Lynch added two goals and an assist. Senior
Chris Stricklin played the first quarter in goal and allowed five
goals before freshman Connor Mishaw played the rest of the way,
turning aside 10 shots and yielding 11 goals.
In a tightly-officiated game, a total of 20 penalties were called,
with Goucher being whistled for 13 infractions.
The Gophers scored the first goal of the day when Averett struck
1:05 into the contest, but the Bullets took command with a 6-0 run
that extended into the second quarter. Danno Lynch, who has nine
goals in his last two games, scored three times during the run
while Ryan added a pair of tallies.
After Goucher scored twice to cut the gap to 6-3, the Bullets ended
the opening half with a 3-0 spurt, receiving goals from Cahill,
Ryan, and Thomas, who was making his first collegiate start.
Sophomore Kyle Boncaro and Averett scored a pair of goals around a
Brody tally in the third quarter to make it 10-5 with 3:51 to go in
the period. But Brody tacked on two more goals to make it a 12-5
game at the end of the third quarter, and Lynch and McGrath scored
early in the fourth to push the advantage to nine with 9:09
remaining and put the game out of reach.
The Bullets pick up action on Saturday when they take on SUNY
Cortland in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III national
championship game. The two teams will meet for the second year in a
row on Long Island at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa, N.Y.,
starting at 1 p.m.
