Lynch, No. 3 Gettysburg Rally Past Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Junior Danno Lynch (Medfield,
Mass./Avon Old Farms) scored a career-high five goals while junior
Chris Cahill (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and senior
Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added four goals apiece as
the third-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team erased an
early six-goal deficit to beat host Hampden-Sydney College 17-10 in
a non-conference game on Saturday.
The Bullets (2-0) fell behind 6-0 and 7-1 and trailed 7-3 at
halftime before catching fire in the second half, when it outscored
the Tigers (1-1) 14-3.
Hampden-Sydney, which received four goals and one assist from Micah
Keller and three goals and two assists from Cole Hawthorne, scored
on its first five shots of the game and took a 5-0 lead at the end
of the first quarter.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 6-0 on their seventh shot just 12
seconds into the second quarter before McGrath put the Bullets on
the scoreboard with 12:01 left in the opening half. After Keller's
third goal, Cahill struck twice over the final 4:38 of the period
to make it a 7-3 halftime deficit.
Hampden-Sydney still led by five (9-4) with 10:38 left in the third
quarter before Gettysburg ran off four unanswered goal to pull to
within one. Keller scored with 3:09 to go in the period to make it
10-8, but that would be the final goal of the day for the Tigers,
as Gettysburg closed the game on a 9-0 run.
McGrath sparked the surge when he scored with two seconds left in
the third quarter. The Bullets then erupted with four goals in the
first five minutes of the fourth quarter, getting a pair of tallies
from Lynch and one apiece from McGrath and senior Patrick Koehl
(Shamong, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep [Pa.]) to make it 13-10 with 10:15
left.
The Bullets tacked on four more goals in the final 8:14, with
Brody, junior J.C. Ward (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), Cahill and
Lynch all finding the back of the net.
Freshman Nick Avedisian (Laytonsville, Md./The Bullis School)
turned in an outstanding performance in his collegiate debut,
winning 19-of-26 face-offs. Avedisian also picked up 10 ground
balls, the most by a Bullet since Jimmy Gates '07 had 11 against
Franklin & Marshall on April 28, 2007.
Sophomore John LeClerc (Acton, Mass./Tilton School [N.H.]) made six
saves in goal while Mark Bagby turned aside eight shots for
Hampden-Sydney. Ben Clarke contributed a goal and three assists for
the Tigers.
It was the second consecutive five-point game to start the season
for Cahill, whose four goals were a career-high. He also picked up
five ground balls. Lynch's six points were also a career-best.
Sophomore Pat Sartory (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) added a
pair of assists for Gettysburg, which out-shot the Tigers 37-20 and
was 16-for-17 on clears.
The Bullets return home on Wednesday, when they host Goucher
College at 3:30 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
