No. 3 Bullets Blow Past Messiah

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Senior Josh Reichert (Englewood,
Colo./Kent School) scored four goals while classmate Joe Brody
(Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) notched three goals and one assist
as the third-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team opened
its 2010 schedule with a 14-2 victory over Messiah College in
non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at
Musselman Stadium.
The Bullets, who out-shot Messiah 39-19, were playing their first
game on their newly-resurfaced field, which was surrounded by snow
left over from a pair of winter storms earlier this month.
The game marked the earliest start in program history, as the 2002
opener on Feb. 27 had been the previous earliest game.
The win marked Gettysburg's 16th straight home victory dating back
to the 2008 season.
Junior Chris Cahill (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy)
added a goal and a career-high four assists while sophomore Pat
Sartory (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) scored twice. Senior
Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) contributed one goal and two
assists.
Messiah, which was also playing its season opener, won 14-of-20
face-offs. However, the Falcons struggled holding onto the ball,
committing 25 turnovers and going just 8-of-18 on clears. The
Bullets turned it over 11 times and were successful on all but one
of their 19 clears.
Reichert scored two of the team's first three goals as the Bullets
built a 3-0 first-quarter lead. Balanced scoring did the trick in
the second quarter, when Gettysburg broke it open by outscoring the
Falcons 6-1 to build a 9-1 halftime advantage. Six different
players scored in the period for the Bullets.
Gettysburg padded its lead in the third quarter with a 5-1 run,
including a pair of goals from Brody.
Freshman Evan Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and junior John Doyle
(Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) each notched their first collegiate
goal for the Bullets.
Making his collegiate debut, sophomore John LeClerc (Acton,
Mass./Tilton School [N.H.]) made six saves in 57:31 of action
before classmate Lucien Reichert (Englewood, Colo./Kent School)
played the final 2:29, making one save in his collegiate debut.
Josh Stewart played the first half in goal for Messiah and made
eight saves before Zach Cureton stopped seven shots in the second
stanza.
Gettysburg plays its first road game of the season on Saturday,
when it visits Hampden-Sydney College at 1 p.m. in a non-conference
outing.
