CORTLAND, N.Y. - The nationally 16th-ranked
Cortland women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than
six minutes into the game and tallied the first eight goals of the
second half and went on to defeat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps of
California, 23-8, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the
2009 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.
With the win, the Red Dragons advanced to the second round and face
The College of New Jersey on Saturday, May 9, while the Athenas had
their season end at 12-2.
Senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) scored a game-high seven points
on three goals and four assists for Cortland and became the first
player in school history to surpass 100 points in a single season.
Torre now has 105 points on a school-record 77 goals and 28
assists. Freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central)
netted a game-high four goals and chipped in with an assist.
Three other players found the back of the net three times. Junior
Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had three goals and three
assists, sophomore Megan Clare (Shirley/William Floyd) recorded
three goals and two assists and sophomore Brianna Shost (Mahopac)
scored three times. Senior Meghan Gallagher (Long Beach)
contributed two goals and two assists, and junior Nicki Mahoney
(Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) and sophomore Alyssa Hoover
(Baldwin) scored twice.
Freshman goalie Brianna Straut (Nanuet) improved her record to 6-1
on the season, stopping six shots and allowing six goals in 46
minutes, 20 seconds before giving way to classmate Amanda Caloia
(Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), who made three saves and gave up two
goals in 13:40. Seniors Casey Costello
(Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Lindsay Bakker
(Sloatsburg/Suffern) each registered three caused turnovers.
For the Athenas, junior Colbi Brawner (Bainbridge Island, WA) led
the offense with three goals. Junior Devon Scott (Portland, OR) and
sophomore Molly Murtaugh (New York) had one goal and one assist
apiece. Senior Kelsey Avalos-Feehan (Carmel, CA) and juniors Cassy
Delano (Boston, MA) and Rebecca Geissler (Mill Valley, CA) each
netted one goal. Sophomore goalie Katie Campbell-Morrison
(Cleveland, OH) turned aside 10 shots.
Torre collected two goals and two assists and Abbott scored twice
in Cortland's game-opening seven-goal run, which spanned just 4:32.
The Athenas, however, battled back by scoring five of the next
seven goals to pull to within 9-5 at the 10:29 mark of the opening
half. Five different players scored for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Cortland answered with the game's next three goals, one each from
Torre, Abbott and Clare, and led 12-5 late in the half. The Athenas
grabbed some momentum heading into intermission when Murtaugh sent
a long pass to Brawner inside the eight-meter fan and Brawner beat
Straut for her second goal with three seconds on the clock.
In the second half, the Red Dragons seized control of the game by
netting eight consecutive goals, with Shost and Clare each scoring
two.
Cortland led 20-6 at that point with 14:07 remaining in the game.
Brawner and Delano stopped the run with back-to-back scores at
11:25 and 8:52, but the Red Dragons tallied the last three goals of
the game for the final of 23-8.
The Red Dragons held a 42-22 advantage in shots and recorded 18
ground balls compared to 14 for the Athenas.
