The Athenas, however, battled back by scoring five of the next seven goals to pull to within 9-5 at the 10:29 mark of the opening half. Five different players scored for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Cortland answered with the game's next three goals, one each from Torre, Abbott and Clare, and led 12-5 late in the half. The Athenas grabbed some momentum heading into intermission when Murtaugh sent a long pass to Brawner inside the eight-meter fan and Brawner beat Straut for her second goal with three seconds on the clock.

In the second half, the Red Dragons seized control of the game by netting eight consecutive goals, with Shost and Clare each scoring two.

Cortland led 20-6 at that point with 14:07 remaining in the game. Brawner and Delano stopped the run with back-to-back scores at 11:25 and 8:52, but the Red Dragons tallied the last three goals of the game for the final of 23-8.
