from press release

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team used a six-goal spurt in the first half to post a 6-5 win over Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground Athletic Complex.

Mary Washington (2-1) started the scoring just 1:15 into the contest when Brent Fisk scored off an assist from Charlie White.

The Generals (1-0) then evened the score just 1:34 later when senior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) found the net unassisted.  The Eagles were then called for an illegal stick and W&L took advantage with a pair of extra-man scores over the next 2:55 and ended the first period with a 3-1 lead.

St. John began the second quarter scoring with another unassisted tally at the 4:37 mark and senior attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Drew Koeneman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) with 1:53 left in the half for a 5-1 lead.  Koeneman then ended the scoring barrage with an unassisted goal at 1:11 and UMW added an unassisted goal by Charlie White with six seconds left to make the score 6-2 at the break.

The Eagles scored a pair of third quarter goals to pull within 6-4 entering the final period and then closed to within 6-5 on a goal by Brian Deal with 6:38 left.  Mary Washington had the ball in the final minute, but W&L senior goalkeeper Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) stopped a point-blank shot at the final horn to preserve the win.

Koeneman posted two goals and one assist to lead the Generals, while Fishman and St. John scored two goals each.  Locke played all 60 minutes in goal and logged five saves.

Deal scored two goals and White had one goal and one assist to lead Mary Washington.  Ryan Kleman played all 60 minutes between the pipes for UMW, making 10 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Colorado College for a 1:00 pm contest.
