Kew's Eight Goals Lead Tampa Past Adelphi
TAMPA, Fla. — Freshman Andrew Kew scored eight goals Friday night to lead No. 8-ranked Tampa to a 19-11 victory over No. 5-ranked Adelphi in front of 1,250 fans at Naimoli Athletic Complex.
Kew, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound attackman out of The Hill Academy in Ontario, scored his eight goals on just nine shots. Two-time All-American attackman Connor Whipple added three goals and four assists for the Spartans, who improved to 2-0.
The Panthers (0-1) lost a season opener for the first time since 2011. Adelphi led 5-4 late in the first quarter, but Riley Piper and Kew scored twice in a 39-second span to jumpstart a seven-goal Tampa run that gave the Spartans a commanding 11-6 halftime lead.
Tampa stretched its lead to six in the third quarter and never looked back, limiting Adelphi's player of the year candidate, attackman Salvatore Tuttle, to just three goals on 3-for-15 shooting. The Panthers were done in by seven fourth-quarter turnovers.
