Domincan, Colorado Mesa Picked to Lead WILA
from press release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Defending champion Dominican University of California and 2012 champion Colorado Mesa University are the co-favorites to win the 2014 Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association title, according to the preseason coaches' poll announced Thursday morning.
The Dominican Penguins, who won last year's crown with an unblemished 6-0 mark, also had three selections to the Preseason All-WILA team. Meanwhile, the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, who finished second to Dominican in 2013 after winning the 2012 crown on tie-breaking procedures, had an association-best six players named to the squad, which was announced in conjunction with the poll.
Both the Penguins and Mavericks received two first place votes in the poll as the four head coaches were asked to rank their opposition 1-3 without voting for their own squad. Adams State University finished third in the poll with seven points and placed four members on the Preseason All-WILA team while inaugural (2011) WILA Champion Notre Dame de Namur University was tabbed fourth in the poll with nine points.
A total of 13 players, including, a pair of long stick midfielders due to a tie in the voting, were selected by position to the Preseason All-WILA squad, which was also selected by a vote of the coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players.
Dominican's representation on the squad is led by 2013 WILA Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Cody Bernstein, one of the three attackmen selected. He is joined on the recognition list by Penguin teammate Kevin Powers, a First Team All-WILA midfielder in 2013, and Bernstein's brother Jake, selected at midfield. Powers was honored at the attack position this year.
All four WILA teams will play scrimmages and exhibitions in the coming weeks leading into the first regular season game on Feb. 22 when Adams State will venture to San Rafael, Calif. to face Dominican.
