Zuccarini Helps St. Mike's Ambush No. 2 Adelphi

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The 11th-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team moved into a tie for first place in the Northeast-10 Conference with an 11-9 win over No. 2 Adelphi University on Saturday at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights, who are ranked in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll and have won seven consecutive contests, improve to 8-2 overall and 7-0 in the league, while the Panthers, who entered the game first in the NE-10, fall to 9-1 and 7-1.
Senior Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) scored a career-high five goals for Saint Michael's, while junior Tim McDonald (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) finished with a career-best four points, tallying two goals and two assists. Senior Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) notched two goals and an assist to pass Bryan Barletto '03 (122) for 10th in program history with 123 career points, and junior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) had a goal and a pair of assists.
Senior Pete Donnally (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) finished with a goal to surpass Mike Boerma '08 (144) and move into sole possession of third place on the program's career points list with 145 points. Junior Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) recorded a career-best seven ground balls, sophomore Luke Solms (Bedford, N.H./Northfield Mount Hermon) had five caused turnovers, and junior Chris DeMairo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) posted double-digit saves for the fourth straight time, finishing with 10.
Senior Nick Watson (Manchester, England/North Chadderton) tallied two goals and an assist for Adelphi, which entered the game with wins in 16 of its last 17, including 13 straight regular season conference wins. Classmate Joe Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored twice, while junior Ikerson Hopper (Onondaga Nation/West Genesee), sophomore Brian Prendergast (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and first-year Salvatore Tuttle (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Farmingdale) each finished with a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Joseph Sciara (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had a goal and eight ground balls, classmate Jamie McAndrew (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) scored, and junior Gregory Puskuldjian (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) picked up eight ground balls. Graduate student Eric Janssen (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) made nine saves in the opening half before senior Aidan Bennardo (Cutchogue, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) stopped seven shots in the second half.
After the Panthers netted the game's first marker 39 seconds into the first quarter, Zuccarini tallied back-to-back goals with 8:23 and 6:07 remaining in the period. Adelphi scored three of the game's next four goals to grab a 4-3 advantage with 8:10 left in the second. McDonald's goal with 6:02 left to play knotted the contest at four before the Panthers scored 45 ticks later to put the visitors ahead, 5-4. Vanzo found the back of the net with 36 seconds remaining in the first half to send the game to a 5-5 tie at halftime.
Each team had a pair of goals in the opening 9:02 of the third quarter, and Adelphi took the lead with 5:08 to play in the period. Zuccarini scored 1:29 later before the visitors tallied with 3:20 left in the third. Donnally's marker that came 3:16 into the final quarter tied the contest for the ninth and final time before Vanzo and Zuccarini scored 1:16 apart to help the Purple Knights move ahead, 11-9, and take the game's first two-goal lead. DeMairo made two saves on six shots in the final 8:24, including one stop with two Purple Knights in the box around the 2:21 mark.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to face Franklin Pierce University at 3 p.m.
