Freshmen Help LIU Post Past Queens (N.C.)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A pair of freshman attackers, Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.), combined for four goals and three assists as they propelled the No. 10 LIU Post men's lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over Queens University (N.C.) in their season opener. The Pioneers begin 2013 with a 1-0 record while Queens evens its slate at 1-1.
LIU Post took a 2-0 lead on goals from junior attacker Connor Mackay (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) and Beccaris early in the first quarter.
Case Hock got Queens on the board with an unassisted goal at 6:44 in the first, but the Pioneers scored five straight – including two by Slane – to take a commanding 7-1 lead with 10 minutes left before halftime. But the Royals responded with four unanswered goals of their own to make it 7-5 in favor of LIU Post early in the third quarter.
But the Pioneers responded and kept the Royals off the board for the remainder of the third quarter, and Slane tallied his third goal of the day at 2:07 to give the Pioneers a three-goal cushion, 8-5. Jimmy Chickerella tallied an unassisted goal for Queens to open the fourth-quarter scoring, but the Pioneers defense again clamped down and kept the hosts off the board. Beccaris connected with freshman attacker Anthony DeLuca (West Islip, N.Y.) for two goals in the final minute to give the Pioneers a 10-6 victory.
LIU Post finished the game outshooting the Royals, 41-31. Queens had a slight edge in ground ball pickups, 27-23, and won 10 faceoffs to eight wins for the Pioneers.
Senior goalkeeper Tim Bradley (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned the win with seven saves in goal.
Slane led the Pioneers with a game-high three goals while Beccaris finished with a goal and three assists.
The Pioneers remain in action on their southern swing tomorrow as they travel to Coker for a 4 p.m. matchup.
