Delaney Helps No. 9 Seton Hill Hold Off Wheeling Jesuit

On Tuesday afternoon the No.-9 ranked Seton Hill men’s lacrosse team faced Wheeling Jesuit in an ECC conference match up at home. The Griffins were able to hold on and secured a 9-8 victory. With the win the Griffins advance to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in ECC play. 

During the first quarter The Griffins got on the board first with a goal from Greg Chaples at the 12:35 mark. Two minutes later the Cardinals fired back with a goal of their own to tie the game at one with five minutes remaining. At the 3:24 mark Seton Hill responded with a goal from James Delaney assisted by Kevin Cala only to surrender another one to the Cardinals a little more than a minute later. At the end of the first quarter the game was tied 2-2. 

In the second quarter Landon DelPrince scored for the Cardinals within the first two minutes of play to take a 3-2 lead with 13:18 on the clock. The Griffins answered back with three goals. Two from James Delaney assisted from Matt Delmonico and Dylan Lefebrve and one from Matt Delmonico within three minutes of action to snatch the lead back and take a 5-3 advantage over the Cardinals. However, the Cardinals soared back into the game sinking two more in the back of the net once again tying the game 5-5 at the 3:38 mark. As the clock was winding down to the final seconds of the first half Matt Delmonico was able to score with two seconds remaining to send the Griffins into halftime leading by one, 6-5. 

The Griffins came out strong in the beginning of the third quarter scoring two goals. Greg Chaples was able to score another one for the Griffins assisted by Kevin Cala and Jimmy Cogley buried one in the back of the net assisted from Dylan Lefebrve to increase their advantage 8-5 at the 8:30 mark. However, it was not over for the Cardinals as they battled back and were able to put two past the keeper to make it a one point game 8-7 with 5:30 remaining in the contest. Two minutes later Kevin Cala scored off a past from Jimmy Cogley to make it 9-7. The Cardinals were able to score one more goal before the end of the third quarter to make it a 9-8 contest with one more quarter to go. However, there was no action in the fourth as neither team was able to score a single goal. 

The Griffins offense was lead by James Delaney who scored three goals and earned one assist. Matt Delmonico added two goals and one assist while Greg Chaples contributed two goals in the win. Keeper Christopher Ilse recorded 13 saves in the game. Seton Hill will be on the road for their next game as they travel Chestnut Hill on Saturday, March 31st at 1PM.
