No. 3 Limestone Dominates St. Leo

GAFFNEY, S.C.
– No.3 Limestone men's lacrosse defeated Saint Leo 19-7 in a NCAA Division II South Region non-conference showdown on Saturday, March 3 at "The Rock". The Saints blanked Saint Leo 7-0 in the second quarter to extend what was a 4-2 lead after the opening period. Senior midfielder Randy Waugh (Severna Park, Md.) led the Saints with four goals while junior midfielder Corey Rich (Sacramento, Calif.) added a trio. The win moves Limestone to 5-0 on the season and extends the Saints' in region win streak to 37 consecutive games while the Lions dropped to 2-3.

Playing on a saturated field as a result of overnight storms the Saints scored the contests first three goals on unassisted scores by Tor Reinholdt (Port Moody, British Columbia) 1:13 into the action, the first of two for him, followed by net finders from Desi Gonzalez (Massapequa, N.Y) and the first -goal on the afternoon from Rich at the 9:39 and 8:07 marks of opening period. Saint Leo would get on the board with a Chris Caiazza goal with 5:34 to play the first quarter followed by one from Matt Obermeyer with 2:32 making it a 4-2 game heading to second period.

Limestone's Waugh scored the first of his goals, :40 seconds into the second quarter , one in which the Saints gained breathing room outscoring the Lions 7-0, finding the back of the net on all but four of 11 shots and led 11-2 at intermission.

Senior midfielder Jackson Decker (Port Moody, British Columbia), who scored twice, was one five multiple goal scorers on the day with junior attack Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia) adding a pair as well.

2012 Tewaaraton Award Nominee, Shayne Jackson (Bowmanville, Ontario), senior attack, tallied four points with three assists to as many different goal scorers and in addition to goal himself.

Sophomore attack Todd Nakasuji (Ajax, Ontario) had two helpers on the day, one of seven Saints with a multiple point afternoon as 15 in all scores at least a point.

Limestone outshot the opposition, 48-21, totaling 30 points (19g, 11a).

At the center "x", junior Jake Ternosky (LaFayette, N.Y.), a midfielder/attack, won 13 of 18 face-offs and earned a game high seven ground balls while junior midfielder Anthony Rodrigues (Lysterfield, Australia) was 8-for-11 and collected five ground balls. In all Limestone captured 21 of the 30 face-offs and held a 49-28 advantage in ground balls.

Limestone dominated in the clear category successful on 10 of 11 attempts (.909%), while Saint Leo managed on nine clears in its 30 attempts (.300%) and turned the ball over 27 times as compared the Saints' 17.

In goal senior Steve Gartelma (Seaford, N.Y.) moved to 5-0 making four saves (7 GAA) in 49:19 of action.

For Saint Leo, Obermeyer led the way with three goals while Ciazza and George Proechel added two each.

Limestone has a quick turnaround back in action on Sunday, March 4 hosting in-region rival Tampa (Fla.) for a non-conference grudge match at "The Rock" with the opening face-off scheduled for noon.
