Marciano Leads Coker to First-Ever Win

– The Coker College lacrosse team opened their inaugural season with a convincing 14-7 win over Shorter College on Friday night. The Cobras were led by junior Steve Marciano's (Shirley, N.Y.) five goals, including the first goal in program history.

Shorter was first on the board with a pair of goals in the first quarter, but the Cobras answered with four goals, taking the 4-2 lead. The Hawks managed one more goal at the end of the quarter to make it 4-3 at the end of the first.

The Cobras proceeded to got on a 10-1 run, making the score 14-4 with just eight minutes left in the game. Shorter did add three more goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter for a final score of 14-7.

Along with Marciano's five-goal game, Keith LaClair (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had four goals and two assists. Ryan Vento (Bellmore, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists, while John Bentton (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Will Hogan (Greenville, S.C.) and Timmy Smith (Commack, N.Y.) each had a goal.

The Coker lacrosse team will be back on the field on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at home against Catawba College. Face-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Byerly Park.
