NYIT Promotes Dunn to Head Coach
from press release
The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation has promoted William Dunn
to the role of head men’s lacrosse coach. Dunn has served as
assistant coach, defensive coordinator, and strength and
conditioning coach for the team for the past 10 seasons.
“It is truly an honor being selected as the next head
coach at NYIT,” said Dunn. “Following in Jack
Kaley’s footsteps is a major endeavor, and my staff and I
look forward to this challenge. We have a very impressive group of
players this year, and plan on many successful seasons to
come.”
During Dunn’s tenure as assistant coach, the Bears compiled a
94-15 record, advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament five
times, played in the national championship game three times, and
won the national title twice—in 2003 and 2008. At NYIT, Dunn
has coached three United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association (USILA) National Defensemen of the Year and one USILA
Goalie and Player of the Year. Nine of his defensive players have
received USILA First Team All-American honors, six have received
USILA Second Team All-American honors, and six others have received
USILA Honorable Mention All-American honors. In 2008, Dunn was
named the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association
(IMLCA) Division II Outstanding Assistant Coach of the Year.
A native of Hicksville, N.Y., Dunn graduated from Hicksville High
School and played for SUNY-Cortland from 1977 to 1980. A
defenseman, Dunn helped Cortland to three straight SUNYAC
championships and three trips to the NCAA Division II tournament,
including one appearance in the national championship. Upon
graduating, Dunn taught physical education and coached lacrosse and
football at MacArthur, Hicksville, Kellenberg Memorial, and Long
Beach high schools.
“After an extensive search, it is a profound pleasure to
introduce William Dunn as the next head lacrosse coach for the NYIT
Bears,” said NYIT Director of Athletics Clyde Doughty Jr.
“Having worked with legendary Coach Kaley for 10 years, I
know Coach Dunn is equipped to meet the challenges of a very
demanding Division II lacrosse environment. I have the utmost
respect for his coaching abilities, and his quality relationships
with our student-athletes and NYIT staff members. I am excited to
have the opportunity to continue our working relationship as we try
to keep the Bears in the hunt for a national
championship.”
At Kellenberg, where Dunn founded the lacrosse program, he was
named the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Coach
of the Year and the Man of the Year twice. He led teams to the
CHSAA finals three times. Dunn also has coached and played for the
North Hempstead Lacrosse Club and served as defensive coordinator
for the Empire State Games Team Long Island three times.
