Six different Pioneers scored to keep the Mercy Mavericks at bay
during a 12-3 East Coast Conference matchup at Hickox Field Sunday
afternoon. Junior Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) and senior Joe Meo
(West Sayville, N.Y.) led C.W. Post in scoring with three goals
apiece while junior attacker Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.)
added three assists to lead the Pioneers to victory.
C.W. Post improved its overall record to 4-0, 2-0 in conference,
while Mercy falls to 1-2 overall, 0-1 in the ECC.
Redshirt freshman Matt Riccio (Trumbull, Conn.) opened up a series
of five unanswered goals less than a minute into the first quarter
as he ripped a feed from Coric past Mavericks keeper T.J. DiCarlo
to put C.W. Post on the board. Meo converted a pass from teammate
Doug Hoch (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) added a goal of his own
as he connected with Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) at the
1:50 mark. Meo tallied his second of three as he received a pass
from junior Vito Minerva (Nesconset, N.Y.) to take advantage of a
man up situation with just 20 seconds left in the first
quarter.
Messina found the back of the net with 8:24 left in the second
quarter to increase the Pioneers’ lead to five goals. Mercy
freshman John Fitzpatrick scored an unassisted goal less than a
minute later in an attempt to rally the Mavericks back. Riccio and
Messina each notched an unassisted goal to give C.W. Post a 7-2
lead. Maverick attacker scored another goal for Mercy before Meo
connected with Coric with 3:27 left on the clock, putting the
Pioneers ahead by six goals. Messina closed out the first half for
C.W. Post with an unassisted goal with just five seconds left in
play to give the Pioneers’ a 9-2 lead at the half.
C.W. Post scored its final three goals of the game in the third
quarter, as Plompen took advantage of a man up situation and senior
midfielder Mike Cama (Levittown, N.Y.) scored his second goal of
the season off a faceoff win. Junior midfielder James Johnston
(Farmingville, N.Y.) tallied the Pioneers’ final goal of the
game for C.W. Post with just under six minutes left in the third
quarter.
Fitzpatrick scored another goal for Mercy a minute and a half into
the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 12-3.
Cama won 15 of 17 faceoffs for C.W. Post while picking up 15 ground
balls. Junior Ronnie Irving (Glen Head, N.Y.) registered two face
off wins for the Pioneers.
Junior keeper Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) earned his second
win of the season, making four saves during 51 minutes in net. Nick
Foote blocked two shots between the pipes for C.W. Post. Dicarlo
took the loss for the Mavericks, making 23 saves in goal.
The Pioneers outshot the Mavericks by a 50-15 margin and held a
28-12 advantage in groundballs and successfully completing 19-20
clears. C.W. Post scored goals on three out of six man-up
opportunities.
C.W. Post is back in action March 13 as they host Bentley
University at 2:30 p.m.
