Queens Stuns No. 9 St. Leo in Double OT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens men's lacrosse team
shocked ninth-ranked St. Leo University, 10-9, at the Queens Sports
Complex Friday afternoon. The win came just one minute and five
seconds into the second overtime when Corey Geroy (Horseheads,
N.Y., Horseheads) hit the back of the net from five feet out to
complete the upset. The Royals hand St. Leo their first loss of the
season to improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Lions drop to
2-1.
The teams matched each other goal for goal throughout the game,
duplicating the other's scoring total each period until Geroy's
game-winner.
Queens fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter before Travis
Speer (Newtown, Conn., Newtown) assisted Brian Masterson (Toledo,
Ohio, St. John's Jesuit) on his first of three goals at 1:59 to put
the Royals on the board. Speer would join the action shortly after
with a goal of his own, knotting the game at two apiece before the
end of the quarter.
The teams alternated scores in the second quarter, starting with a
the Lions' Kyle Marceau who would go on to tally a hat trick before
the end of the first half. Down 2-3, David Weise (Chesapeake Beach,
Md. , Huntingtown) scored the first of his two goals with 51
seconds remaining to tie the game at the half.
The Royals came out of the break and scored just one minute out of
the gate to take their first lead of the game, 6-5. St. Leo scored
a pair to take the lead back before Weise maneuvered another late
goal to tie the game at seven.
Queens maintained the momentum from Weise's late-quarter heroics
and scored the next two goals of the game to go ahead, 9-7, with
under six minutes remaining. St. Leo rallied back with George
Proechel's third goal of the day to bring the Lions within one.
After a St. Leo timeout, the Lions stormed down the field to tie
the game, 9-9. with 2:54 remaining, both teams elected to play
defensively and force overtime.
After a null first overtime, the Royals wasted little time going on
the attack in the second. Leveraging for position behind the net,
Louie Boyle (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) dished the ball as quickly as
he received it to Geroy for the game-winning goal.
A statistical stalemate, the Royals can credit their ball handling
as the advantage, as they committed only 18 turnovers opposed to 22
by the Lions.
The Royals are back in action Sunday at noon when they welcome
Florida Southern College to the Queens Sports Complex.
