LAURINBURG, N.C.-The No. 4 nationally ranked
Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team outshot host St. Andrews
Presbyterian College 47-8 en route to an 18-0 win at Knights Field
on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman attackman Brian Scheetz (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had a
memorable collegiate debut with a team-high six points for the
Lakers (1-0). Sheetz recorded a hat trick and providing three
assists.
St. Andrews (0-2) kept the score close in the first quarter holding
Mercyhurst to just two goals in the opening 15 minutes but the
Lakers exploded for six goals in the second and eight more in the
third. In a slow paced fourth quarter, Mercyhurst matched its goal
total from the first to finish with 18 total markers.
Eleven Lakers scored including a four-point performance from junior
Trevor Rice (Fairport, N.Y.), who notched a hat trick and one
assists. Seniors Todd Richardson (Memphis, N.Y.) and Michael
Sciulli (Pittsburg, Pa.), along with sophomore Kyle Kallay
(Orangeville, Canada) all found the back of the net twice. Sciulli
had three points with one assist. Freshman James Chayka (Syracuse,
N.Y.) added a goal and a helper.
Mercyhurst dominated in all areas of the game taking more shots,
47-8, and picking up more ground balls, 49-18. The Lakers won
15-of-22 face offs and scored on 50-percent (4-of-8) of their
extra-man opportunities. SAPC was unable to score on its only
EMO.
Junior goalkeeper Zach Nash (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up the win
making two saves in the first 37 minutes. Classmate backup Michael
Jeschawitz (Watertown, N.Y.) also made two stops.
SAPC junior starting netminder Patrick Wade (West Windsor, N.J.)
took the loss playing majority of the game. Wade had 10 saves while
freshman Kyle Davitt (Shoreview, Minn.) finished with six stops
between the pipes.
Sophomore Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.) and freshman Bobby Murray
(Miami, Fla.) accounted for half of the Knights shots with two
apiece. Michela might have had the best scoring chance for the
Royal Blue & White, but his shot midway through the second
quarter just missed clanking off the post.
St. Andrews hosts No. 7 Dowling College on Saturday at 11
a.m.
