Hofstra's Llinares Named Epoch/LM Player of the Week

from LaxMagazine.com staff reports | Twitter

Hofstra put the lacrosse world on notice Saturday with a 9-5 upset of North Carolina, fueled by senior Sam Llinares, whose five-goal performance has earned him Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine Player of the Week honors.

Llinares, a 5-foot-9, 155-pound attackman, scored three of his four goals — including two in a seven-second span in the third quarter — during a 5-0 run that put the Pride in control. He demonstrated instant chemistry with junior college transfer Josh Byrne, who added four goals and two assists in his Hofstra debut.

The Pride picked up their biggest win over a ranked opponent since an 8-7 victory at No. 2 Notre Dame on March 9, 2013. Llinares, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, is the first Hofstra player since Tom Kessler to post 50 points or more in consecutive seasons. The Denver Outlaws draft pick appears to be well on his way to a similar mark in 2016.
