Georgetown, Lehigh to Battle at Relentless Cup
from Press Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - HEADstrong Foundation™ (HF) recently unveiled plans for the Second Annual Relentless Cup which features Lehigh men's lacrosse against Georgetown. The matchup will take place on Saturday, Apr. 12 at Ridley High School in Folson, Pa. The Relentless Cup is a special fundraising lacrosse event uniting communities in support of the HEADstrong Foundation by combining interstate youth games, high school games and will be highlighted by Lehigh taking on Georgetown under the lights at 7 p.m.
The Relentless Cup was introduced in 2012 as a new spring fundraising event to support the HEADstrong Foundation's fight against blood cancers. In its inaugural year, the event featured Hofstra who captured the coveted trophy in a 13-1 victory over Saint Joseph's.
Lacrosse at all levels will be showcased. This year, Ridley High School, which was HF™ Founder Nicholas Colleluori's high school alma mater, will face-off against Abington High School.
Both Lehigh and Georgetown have strong ties to the cause as Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese has been a strategic ally in the fight and a key advocate for the cause within the college game and Georgetown head coach Kevin Warne played collegiately at Hofstra, where Colleluori attended. The game is all the more important to Georgetown assistant Matt Rewkowski, who coached at Hofstra during Colleluori's battle against non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Proceeds from The Relentless Cup will support Nick's House™, the Nicholas E. Colleluori Lymphoma Research Fund and the quality of life services for cancer patients and families provided by the HEADstrong Foundation™.
"We are humbled and honored to be included in the 2014 Relentless Cup," said Cassese. "As a program, we very much believe in and support the mission of the HEADstrong Foundation. The Colleluori family has worked tirelessly in their quest to fight blood cancer and help those who are currently in the fight. We hope this top flight Division I lacrosse game against a very talented Georgetown team can help raise awareness for the Foundation and help raise funds to support its mission."
"Last year, we were really taken aback by the response of our supporters as the event exceeded our expectations," said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick's Mom. "It inspired us to make the event even better, so we expanded the youth component allowing for more players and families to be part of it and set out to land an incredible collegiate matchup. We are truly thankful to Nick's beloved Ridley High School for allowing us the ability to host this event on campus and wish to sincerely thank Lehigh University, Georgetown University and all of the participating programs for joining our fight. We look forward to sharing an enjoyable spring day of lacrosse with so many wonderful people."
Despite losing attackmen David DiMaria and Dante Fantoni to graduation, the Mountain Hawks return 52 combined goals and 24 assists between juniors Dan Taylor and Patrick Corbett alone. Taylor finished second on the team with 50 points (29 goals, 21 assists) a season ago while Corbett earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors with 26 points (23 goals, three assists) as the team's leading scorer at midfield.
The Mountain Hawks open the 2014 season on Feb. 1 at Furman before hosting Marquette on Feb. 8 and Villanova the following Saturday. Lehigh faces six teams ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook poll, by the coaches or both. Georgetown was not ranked in the Inside Lacrosse poll, but were ranked 25th by the coaches.
