Crampton, Meurer, Murphy Anchor ECAC Awards

from Press Release

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Lacrosse League announced its 2014 All-Conference teams and major award winners today. The Fairfield University Stags and United States Air Force Academy Falcons each picked up a pair of major awards, while the Ohio State University Buckeyes placed a league best 12 student-athletes on the All-ECAC teams. The voting was completed by the ECAC Lacrosse League head coaches, who could not cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.

Air Force senior Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) was selected as the 2014 ECAC Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Falcon student-athlete to receive one of the league's major awards. Crampton leads the ECAC with 35 goals this season and has registered a league-high 51 points through 13 regular season contests. He currently ranks No. 15 in NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse in goals per game (2.69) and No. 17 in points per game (3.92). Crampton was named the ECAC Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week on four occasions during the regular season. He helped lead Air Force to a share of its first-ever ECAC Lacrosse regular season title and a No. 3 seed in the upcoming Conference Tournament Championship.

Ohio State University senior Joe Meurer (Towson, Md.) was tabbed as the ECAC Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year, joining former Buckeye Matt Kawamoto as the only winners in program history. Meurer has started all 13 games for Ohio State during the 2014 season, picking up 13 ground balls and causing 11 turnovers thus far. He was the leader of the No. 8 scoring defense in the country and was named a 2014 Senior CLASS Award finalist as well as an All-ECAC First Team performer for the second consecutive season. A team captain, Meurer helped guide the Buckeyes to a No. 2 seed in the 2014 ECAC Lacrosse Tournament Championship and a tie atop the final regular season league standings.

After helping Bellarmine to its first season above .500 since 2010, junior Bobby Schmitt (Louisville, Ky.) has been chosen as the ECAC Lacrosse Specialist of the Year. Schmitt appeared in all 12 of the Knights' games in 2014, starting 10 contests and handing out seven assists from his longstick midfield position. He leads the ECAC with 19 caused turnovers and also finished in the top-10 in ground balls (36). Schmitt earned All-ECAC First Team honors this season, marking the third time in his career he has garnered All-ECAC laurels. Schmitt was previously named to the All-ECAC Second Team in 2013 and ECAC All-Rookie Team in 2012.

Senior goalkeeper Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) was named the 2014 ECAC Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Year after backstopping Fairfield to one of the nation's top defenses. Murphy has registered an 8.54 goals against average, .534 save percentage and turned aside 134 shots in 821:51 of action. Nationally, he ranks No. 12 in goals against average and No. 26 in save percentage, while the Stags were No. 14 in scoring defense during the regular season. Murphy is also second on Fairfield in ground balls (39) and is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (13) while being named to the All-ECAC First Team for the first time in his career. After posting an 8.15 goals against average and a .568 save percentage in conference play, Murphy helped the Stags to a 3-1 record within the confines of the ECAC and a No. 1 seed in this weekend's Conference Tournament Championship.

Fairfield freshman Dave Fleming (San Carlos, Calif.) is the ECAC Lacrosse Rookie of the Year. Fleming notched 29 points (22g, 7a) during the regular season and has scored at least one goal in every game for the Stags. In 14 games, he recorded 11 multi-point games, six multi-goal games and two hat tricks. Fleming was named the ECAC Lacrosse Rookie of the Week three times in 2014 and was also named to the ECAC All-Rookie team.

In his sixth season at the helm of the Air Force Falcons, Eric Seremet was selected by his peers as the 2014 ECAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. It is also marks the first time a Falcons' head coach has garnered this award. Seremet guided Air Force to an 8-5 record, a 3-1 conference ledger and a share of the ECAC Lacrosse regular season title – the first time the Falcons have won a Division I conference championship. The eight wins are the most by an Air Force team since 1995, and during his six-year tenure the Falcons have posted 35 wins. Air Force currently ranks No. 13 nationally in scoring offense (11.85 goals per game), tied for No. 22 in scoring defense (9.23 goals against per game) and No. 14 in scoring margin (+2.62).
