Mercer Edges High Point in Key ASun Tilt

HIGH POINT, N.C. – In a match-up of the top two teams in the Atlantic Sun, the Mercer University lacrosse team beat High Point in an epic 10-9 game at Vert Stadium on Saturday.
Mercer (4-3, 3-0 A-Sun) found itself trailing High Point (6-3, 2-1 A-Sun) 9-6 at the end of the third period before rattling off five unanswered goals in the final 15:39 to emerge victorious. The win snapped the Panthers six-game win streak.
Senior Cole Branch scored the game-winner with 5:32 left to go in the game and Mercer salted the final minutes to remain unbeaten in league play and assume an outright claim of the conference lead.
Mercer's attack was paced by sophomore Chris Baxa and freshmanJames Tautkus, who each netted three goals. Baxa registered the game-tying goal with just under seven minutes to play, while Tautkus also grabbed four groundballs.
The two teams traded the first six goals of the game until High Point went on a 6-2 run beginning at the 13:24 mark of the second period.
Junior Justin Evans won 10-of-20 faceoffs and grabbed eight groundballs. Senior Eoin Collins and sophomore Anssi Kaisalmi added goals while junior Timmy Geran had two assists and junior Sam Grayson added one helper.
The Bears were 17-of-22 on clear attempts and held the Panthers to just one extra-man goal on six chances.
Mercer is in the midst of a five-game road swing and will play at Lafayette next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
