Long Scoreless Stretch Leads Siena By Monmouth

from Press Release

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Red-shirt sophomore goalie Tommy Cordts and the Saints' defense held Monmouth scoreless for over 51 minutes as Siena Lacrosse shut down the Hawks 8-3 at Siena Turf Field. Cordts finished with 10 saves as the Saints won their 10th straight MAAC Regular Season home game.

The three goals allowed by the Saints (5-3, 2-0) were the program's fewest since a 14-2 win over Canisius on Apr. 14, 2012. The 11 combined goals scored also marked the squad's lowest scoring game since a 4-2 win at the Golden Griffins on Apr. 28, 2010.

Monmouth (0-7, 0-1) scored on the opening possession of the game, just 56 seconds in. But that would be all the scoring for the Hawks for the next 51:18 thanks to Cordts and the Siena defense.

Monmouth's goalies Nick Hreshko and Garrett Conaway were up to the task as well as the Saints led a pitcher's duel 3-1 through three quarters.

But after the teams combined for just four goals over the first three periods, the scoring opened up in the final quarter as the squads totaled seven goals. Siena scored the first two to build a 5-1 lead which would prove to be more than enough.

Two-time defending MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Richie Hurley led all scorers with six points (five assists) for the Saints. Hurley entered the week ranking fourth nationally in assists per game and fifth in scoring.

Red-shirt senior captain Kyle Curry netted his second straight hat trick and junior faceoff specialist Casey Dowd won 12-15 draws and picked up 10 groundballs for the Saints.

Hreshko and Conaway each played a half in goal for the Hawks and combined to make 17 saves. Kevin Murphy scored two of the three goals for the first-year program which remains in search of its first win.
