Lafayette Edges Colgate in Patriot League Tilt

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette men's lacrosse earned its first win of the season, 8-7, over visiting Colgate on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Patriot League play. Jake Hyatt made game-high 15 saves, including 10 in the second half to help slow the Colgate attack.

After the Raiders took an early 1-0 lead at the 13:59 mark of the first quarter, but Lafayette's Erik Cannon tallied his first goal of the season at with 12 and a half minutes to play in the period. With under five minutes left in the first, John Floyd found Dillon Confalone in front of the cage to give the Leopards a 2-1 advantage.

Lafayette pushed its lead to two, 3-1, with six seconds to play in the quarter, when Brian Bock buried a shot off a pass from Robert Orazietti. On the ensuing faceoff, Adam Broeckaert won the draw and marched straight in on goal. Broeckaert's shot found the back of the cage with one second left in the frame, and the Leopards led, 4-1 after one.

Sonny Round scored the only goal of the second quarter at the 4:19 mark, and Hyatt turned away four shots during the period to send the Leopards into the break leading 5-1.

Colgate trimmed the Lafayette lead to three, 5-2 with 11 minutes to play in the third quarter. Orazietti pushed the lead back to four a minute and a half later with his third goal of the season. Colgate's Ryan Walsh countered for the Raiders scoring three straight goals to close out the period. Hyatt made five saves to preserve a 6-5 lead for the Leopards.

Freshman Jason Sands notched the first goal of his career to start the scoring in the final quarter. Sands took a pass from Bock and found the back of the cage. Walsh tallied again for the Raiders to make it a one-goal game with nine minutes to play.

Floyd added to the Lafayette lead with five and a half minutes left. Walsh again answered for Colgate, making it 8-7 with under three minutes on the clock. Hyatt made a huge save on Walsh with 23 seconds left and the Leopards' Brendan Gover scooped up the ground ball to give the Leopards the 8-7 victory.

The Leopards had eight players score, while Orazietti, Bock and Floyd each picked up a goal and an assist. Broeckaert picked up a team-high four groundballs, while Mac Ahsler caused two turnovers to lead the defense. Hyatt improved to 1-1, making 15 saves in the win. Brandon Burke made 10 saves in a losing effort for the Raiders.

Lafayette is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Patriot League foe Army at noon.
