Georgetown Edges Navy for Boyle Cup, 9-8 in OT
from Press Release
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior attack Jeff Fountain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./St. Paul's) wrapped around the cage and bounced a shot over the Navy goalkeeper's shoulder with 2:08 remaining in overtime, as the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) defeated Navy (1-1, 0-0 Patriot League), 9-8 on a snowy afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to win the Boyle Cup.
Fountain, who was one of four Hoyas with two goals, scored an overtime game-winner against Navy for the second consecutive season to help GU start 2-0 for the first time since 2007.
Graduate student Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) won 12-of-19 face-offs, including 8-of-10 after halftime, while redshirt junior goalkeeper Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) made 15 saves. Freshman Peter Conley (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored two goals and had two assists to lead the Hoyas offense.
The Midshipmen took an early, 1-0 lead on a Sam Jones goal, but the Hoyas would battle back. After killing a one-minute penalty, Peter Conley (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) answered with an unassisted goal at the 6:26 mark in the first quarter. Navy scored three minutes later, making the score 2-1, the score at the end of the first quarter.
Georgetown opened quickly in the second quarter, as Conley took a ground ball away from Navy's goalkeeper behind the net, then found fellow-freshman Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./ Lake Highland Prep) for an empty net goal, tying the score at two goals apiece. Knarr won the ensuing face-off, then fed to Conley on the left wing for a goal, to put GU in front 3-2.
Navy tied the score midway through the second quarter, as Jones picked up another ground ball in front of the cage and flipped it in over his head to tie the score at three. Charlie McCormick (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) put Georgetown back in front with a goal at the 4:01 mark in the second quarter. Lewis added his second goal of the game with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. A Navy penalty gave GU an extra-man opportunity soon after, as Conley found Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) for a quick goal, giving the Hoyas a 6-3 lead at the half
McCormick scored the first goal of the second half, as he ripped a shot into the top left corner of the net to put the Hoyas in front 7-3 with 9:26 remaining in the third quarter. Alex Heyward answered for Navy one minute later to close the gap back to three goals.
This Midshipmen opened the fourth quarter on a 2-0 run with goals from Jones and T.J. Hanzsche, cutting the Hoyas lead to one, 7-6, before Fountain scored an unassisted goal to end the run, giving the Hoyas an 8-6 lead.
Navy scored the next two goals, with the equalizer coming on a fastbreak with 53.8 seconds left in regulation, to send the game into overtime for the fourth time in the last six meetings between the two schools.
But for the second season in a row, Knarr won an overtime face-off and Fountain score the game-winner to help GU to a 9-8 win.
