USILA Division I Coaches' Poll: Last Chance to Make Dance
It's the last week of the regular season. In some cases, the coaches' poll reflects NCAA tournament likelihoods — such as Ohio State, a bubble-in team right now, rising to No. 10 in the country. In other cases, the poll includes teams that likely won't make the NCAA tournament (Johns Hopkins at No. 14) and teams that definitely won't make it (Virginia at No. 20). Nonetheless, the poll is good barometer to look at as we enter a week of conference tournaments and teams' last chances to extend their seasons.
Who's Hot?
Cornell (+4): While UNC is the consensus No. 1 among the coaches, the Big Red and Rob Pannell seem to be getting red hot at just the right time and are now ranked second. Pannell put together a nine-point effort in Cornell's 17-11 win Saturday against Princeton and the Big Red host the Ivy League tournament, as the league's top seed, beginning Friday.
Syracuse (+4): The Orange finally won or lost a game by more than one goal, beating Notre Dame handily, 10-4, on Saturday at the Big City Classic. Before that, Syracuse has played in all one-goal games, winning four and losing one, to Hobart.
Who's Not?
Maryland (-5): The Terps, who looked dominant to start the season, bowed out in the ACC tournament semifinals to Virginia. It's offense is sputtering, scoring 18 goals in the last three games.
Who's New?
Virginia (19): It's little consolation for your
season ending, but Virginia finishes its year, at least, in the Top
20.
Villanova (20): The Wildcats are the top seed for
this weekend's Big East tournament, which they host. They need at
least one win the tournament to be NCAA tournament eligible.
