Rutgers Announces 2014 Men's Captains
from Press Release
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2013) – Rutgers men's lacrosse head coach Brian Brecht has named senior defenseman Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.), junior midfielder Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.), junior M/FO Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.), senior defenseman Andrew Parrilla (Wyckoff, N.J.) and senior midfielder Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) team captains for the 2014 season, it was announced Tuesday. Contino, Goss and Terranova will serve as captains for the second-straight season. The five have combined for 177 games played at RU.
"It is an exciting week as we begin our fall practices," said Brecht. "I am proud and honored to announce our captains for the upcoming season. All five possess the qualities that we are looking for both on and off the field. Not only are they talented players for us, but they have all excelled in the classroom, which is also very important. All five of them were over a 3.00 GPA last year, earning BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors. As we continue to build success on the field, we want to continue the success our student-athletes have had off the field. I am confident Nick, Brian, Joe, Andrew and Anthony will do just that in leading our program this year."
Contino has started all 45 games of his Rutgers career, causing 65 turnovers. In 2013, he led the Scarlet Knights with 24 caused turnovers. He also posted one assist and scooped up a season-best 30 ground balls.
Goss, the only junior to serve his second stint as a captain, finished 2013 fourth on the team in goals (13) and points (20). He has amassed 27 starts in two seasons with RU, playing in 29 total games.
As a faceoff specialist, Nardella was dominant last season, earning Second Team All-BIG EAST honors. He finished the year ranked fourth in the nation in faceoff win percentage (.622) and ground balls per game (8.40). Nardella has seen action in all 30 games of his RU career.
Parrilla finished 2013 second on the team with 15 caused turnovers, including five against Princeton on April 9. The senior also collected 25 ground balls.
A midfielder, Terranova has played in 43 games as a Scarlet Knight, posting his best season of his career in 2013 with 11 goals and eight assists. The Flemington, N.J., native also collected 31 ground balls a season ago.
