Hurley Nets Seven as Siena Romps Over VMI
from press release
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Lacrosse erupted for eight goals in the first quarter and cruised to a 16-10 win over VMI on Senior Day and Alumni Appreciation Day. Red-shirt sophomore Richie Hurley had a career day, scoring seven goals and finishing with eight points.
After posting the program's first-ever top-10 win over crosstown rival UAlbany Tuesday, the Saints (7-8, 4-2) suffered no letdown against overmatched VMI (1-12, 1-5). In fact, Siena built off that momentum in a big way and heads into next weekend's MAAC Tournament playing its best lacrosse of the year having won five of six.
Siena scored eight goals in a nine-minute span in the opening quarter to put the game away early. Hurley, who scored on all seven shots he took, netted four of his tallies in the first period.
Nate Barry, Colin Clive and Kieran Donohue each added three points for the Saints which have won five in a row over VMI. With his first quarter goal, Clive became the 23rd player in program history to eclipse the 100 career point mark.
Sophomore Casey Dowd also a record setting day, winning 16 of 25 faceoffs and picking up nine groundballs. Dowd now has 110 groundballs on the season, breaking Tony Asterino's single season record of 107 in 1981.
VMI out-shot the Saints 42-32, but Matt Sharp came up with another big effort. The senior posted 11 saves and allowed just six goals in three-plus quarters of action as he and his 12 classmates were victorious in their final game at Siena Turf Field.
Gage Snowbarger led VMI with four goals, while Alex Henthorn and Bernie Mowbray each scored twice for the Keydets which have lost 10 straight road games dating back to last season. Siena, which last week secured the No. 3 seed in the MAAC Championships, will face second seeded Jacksonville Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. in semifinal action. Game time will be determined later this weekend.
