from staff reports
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a meeting of the final two unbeaten teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) the Marist men's lacrosse team used a seven-goal third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Jacksonville 14-11 on Saturday.
Jack Doherty tied a career-high with seven points on four goals and three assists to go along with four ground balls. Connor Rice had four assists, all coming in the second half, and Drew Nesmith, Joseph Radin and Mike Begley all scored twice. Matt Dugan won 15 of 28 face-offs and tied with Gannon Osborn for the team lead with five ground balls. Dave Scarcello made a career-high 13 saves in the win.
Marist (8-2, 4-0 MAAC) fell behind early as the Dolphins (6-4, 3-1 MAAC) scored the first two goals of the game to take a 2-0 lead just 4:48 into the game.
However, unassisted goals by Doherty and Begley just 35 seconds apart knotted the score up at the 4:05 mark of the first quarter. The score stayed 2-2 going into the second period.
The two teams traded goals in the second quarter, with Nesmith scoring on an assist from Osborn and Radin scoring an unassisted tally to keep the score tied at 4-4. However, Jacksonville scored with 2:47 left in the quarter to take a 5-4 lead at halftime.
The Red Foxes' offense erupted in the third quarter, scoring the first three goals of the quarter in just a 2:09 span. Nesmith scored his second of the game just 18 seconds into the frame on a man-up opportunity and Doherty took a pass from Rice to give Marist its first lead of the game with 13:45 on the clock, 6-5. Jim Marks expanded the lead to 7-5 with an unassisted score at the 12:51 mark.
After Jacksonville scored three of the next four goals to tie the score at eight, the Red Foxes again scored three consecutive goals to take an 11-8 lead after three quarters. Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) scored Marist's second man-up goal of the game on Doherty's first assist. Radin scored from Rice at the 1:40 mark and Rice found Begley for a score just 40 seconds later.
Twice the Dolphins pulled to within two goals in the fourth quarter, but each time Marist had an answer as Jacksonville was never able to get any closer. Doherty had a goal and two assists in the quarter and Aedan Herman and Dillon Walker each scored.
The Red Foxes return home next Saturday with the opportunity to clinch the MAAC Regular Season Championship when they take on Siena in a 1 p.m. game at Tenney Stadium. It is Marist's Alumni Gaame and the team will also celebrate its 13 seniors with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
