Friars Make it Four in a Row With Win Over Sacred Heart

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team tallied its fourth consecutive win with a 12-10 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Juniors Sean Wight (Silver Spring, Md.) and Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) combined for a total of 10 points on four goals and one assist apiece. The Friars improve to 4-0 (0-0 BIG EAST) while the Pioneers fall to 0-5 (0-0 NEC).
With 10:50 left to play in the first quarter, Providence trailed Sacred Heart, 3-0. Barton opened the scoring for the Friars at the 4:21 mark of the quarter, when he burried a feed from freshman Kevin Blair (Hingham, Mass.). The Friars and Pioneers each added one goal apiece in the remainder of the quarter to give Sacred Heart a 4-2 advantage headed into the second.
In the second quarter, Providence outscored Sacred Heart, 4-2, with goals from Blair, Wright, Barton and junior Robby Stack (Medfield, Mass.).
The Friar offense paced the third quarter, tallying six goals to give the Friars a 12-9 advantage headed into the final 15 minutes of play. Sacred Heart tallied its 10th and final goal with 2:34 remaining in regulation to reach the final score, 12-10.
Wright's four goals completed his fourth hat-trick on the season. Wright leads the team in scoring with 18 points on 13 goals and five assists. Barton is second on the team in scoring with 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists. Barton notched his first hat-trick of the season in the victory.
On the Denfensive end, Providence limited the Pioneers to 29 shots. In addition, Sacred Heart finished 0-7 in extra man opportunities.
Freshman goalie, Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) recorded his fourth win of the season and tallied 11 saves in the Friars' victory.
Starting the 2013 campaign 4-0 (0-0 BIG EAST) marks the most wins that the Providence lacrosse program has recorded in a single season since joining the BIG EAST conference in 2010. Providence returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 when the Friars travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
