Horvath's Overtime Goal Gives Vermont Victory

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Junior Graham Horvath tallied an unassisted goal with 1:44 remaining in the first overtime to send Vermont on to an 8-7 victory over Sacred Heart in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. With the win, the Catamounts improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 0-8.
A.J. Masson opened the game's scoring just under six minutes into play with an unassisted tally to give Vermont the early lead. Cody Marquis answered back for the Pioneers two minutes later with his first score of the game to tie things at 1-1.
Tim Yager put the Catamounts back out in front with a goal off a feed from Patrick Clark at the 5:48 mark of the first frame. Alex Miller tallied the final goal of the frame with five minutes remaining to pull Sacred Heart back even, 2-2.
Following a Sacred Heart penalty, Drew Philie netted the first goal of the second period at the 7:15 mark, with the assist going to Horvath. The Pioneers responded and grabbed their first lead of the contest after two straight goals put them up, 4-3, with 5:05 to play in the half.
Horvath scored Vermont's second man-up goal of the period with 24 seconds showing on the clock to tie the score at 4-4 heading into halftime.
Horvath gave the Catamounts a 5-4 lead after opening with the first score of the third period at the 12:01 mark. Clark collected Vermont's third man-up goal of the afternoon six minutes later to increase the Catamount lead to two. Masson finished off the third frame with his second score of the game to put Vermont on top, 7-4, heading into the final period.
Sacred Heart collected the first two scores of the fourth frame to pull within one with 11:29 remaining in the contest. Matt King netted a goal with 6:08 remaining to tie the score, 7-7, and send the game into overtime.
With 1:44 left in the first overtime period, Horvath tallied his third goal of the game to send Vermont off with an 8-7 victory, and improve the team's record to 3-5 on the season.
Horvath paced the Catamounts with a team-high three goals and an assist. Masson chipped in two scores and one helper, and Clark tallied a goal and assist. Derek Braig led the team with five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Justin Rosenberg earned his third win in net for Vermont after making 12 saves on the afternoon. Jon Flood made nine saves in the losing effort for the Pioneers.
