Philie Climbs Vermont Charts in Win over Wagner

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior captain Drew Philie scored a career-high seven goals to lead Vermont past Wagner, 15-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday from Virtue Field. The win moves Vermont to 2-5 on the season, while Wagner falls to 1-6.

Ahmad Zachary opened the scoring just 30 seconds into play with his second goal of the season. Wagner's Colin O'Rourke tallied the team's first goal of the contest a minute later to pull the Seahawks back even.

Vermont collected the next four goals, including two from Philie, to take a 5-1 lead with 2:35 to play in the period. Griffin Leclaire broke up the Vermont run with his first score of the game with just over a minute remaining in the first frame.

Philie netted another goal 15 seconds into the second period to put Vermont back up by four, 6-2.

Both teams were held scoreless for the next 10 minutes of play before Andrew Buckanavage and Augie Remien scored goals 50 seconds apart to extend the Catamount lead to 8-2 with 3:45 showing on the clock.

O'Rourke tallied a score for Wagner off a feed from Leclaire at the 1:34 mark, but Philie answered back with two more goals in the final 27 seconds of the half to give UVM a 10-3 lead heading into halftime.

Wagner's Nick DePhillips scored the team's lone goal of the third period with 12:16 showing on the clock to cut the Seahawks deficit to 10-4. Vermont then received goals from A.J. Masson, Philie, and Graham Horvath to close out the third period with a 13-4 advantage.

Both teams traded a pair of goals in the fourth frame as Vermont closed out its victory by a final score of 15-6.

The Catamounts outshot Wagner 40-28 and held advantages in ground balls (33-23) and face-offs (13-12).

Philie led all scorers with eight points on seven goals and an assist, while Masson chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Just Rosenberg played the first three periods in goal for Vermont, making seven saves en route to his second win of the season. Nicholas Gibaldi took the loss for Wagner despite making nine saves.
