Dolphins Start Off Strong to Beat Marquette

from press release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville scored three goals in a two minute span of the first quarter to ignite a balanced offense which led to a 13-7 men's lacrosse win over Marquette today at D.B. Milne Field.

"We came out with real good energy but we were also executing," said JU Head Coach Guy Van Arsdale. "The difference was we shared the ball well and just made the plays we're supposed to make."

Ten different players score for JU (2-2) which won its second straight game and sixth consecutive contest on D.B Milne Field dating back to last season. Senior Cam Mann (Hamilton, Ont.) and freshman Dakota Rohlin (Temecula, Calif.) each had two goals and an assist to lead the Dolphins.

"We're not going to have one guy that lights up the scoreboard," said Van Arsdale of the Dolphins balanced offense.

"We need to be able to spread it around and attack a defense from lots of different areas. When our guys understand that we are very successful."

Rohlin put JU on the board five minutes into the contest off an assist from sophomore Ari Waffle (Manlius, N.Y.). The Dolphins followed with two more scores in less than two minutes for a 3-0 just seven minutes in the contest.

Senior James Trentini (Fort Washington, Pa.) kept the momentum going with back-to-back goals as the Dolphins rolled out to a 5-0 lead mid-way through the second quarter.

Marquette begin to rally scoring four times in the final seven minutes of the half to cut the JU lead to 7-4 at halftime.

A goal from junior Conor Igoe (Columbus, Ohio) 30 seconds into the third quarter and another from Waffle three minutes later extend the JU lead to 9-4. The Dolphins eventually built up a 13-6 lead before the Golden Eagles scored in the closing seconds sounded to account for the final margin.

JU returns to action on Tuesday against Robert Morris. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
