Bucknell Holds Navy Scoreless for 51 Minutes
from press release
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sean Doyle scored a game-high three goals and Bucknell outshot Navy by a 57-14 margin as the Bison posted a convincing 11-2 victory over the Mids in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at chilly Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison defense held Navy without a goal for the final 51 minutes as Bucknell scored the game's final 10 goals.
The nine-goal win was the largest ever for the Bison in the series that now spans 13 games. Seven of the first 12 games in the series were decided by just one goal.
Todd Heritage and Chase Bailey scored two goals apiece for Bucknell, which improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Patriot League play. David Dickson contributed three assists and was one of three Bison to tally four points in the contest.
Bucknell's defense was the story, though, as it forced 22 Navy (2-3, 0-1 PL) turnovers, including 20 in the final three quarters. Reserve Alex Spring posted a game-high five caused turnovers. The Bison turned the ball over just 12 times and converted 15 of 16 clears.
The Bucknell defense limited the Mids to just four shots in the second half and goalie Kyle Feeney was called upon to make just five saves, compared to 19 by his Navy counterparts, Nolan Hickey (18) and John Connors (1).
The Bison led by a 5-2 score at halftime, but proceeded to keep possession of the ball virtually the entire second half. They won 5 of 8 faceoffs in the second half, outshot the Mids 29-4 and won the second-half ground ball battle 24-12.
Navy scored the first goal of the game, just 66 seconds after the opening faceoff. The Mids then scored with 6:08 to play in the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead. That was the last goal for Navy, which came into the contest averaging 12.0 goals per game. Bucknell will continue its four-game homestand next Saturday, March 9, when it hosts Massachusetts at noon.
