Snow Day: No. 15 Fairfield Nips Navy on Late Goal

from press release

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sam Snow (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) scored  the game winning goal with four seconds to play in regulation to give the #15 Fairfield University men's lacrosse team a 10-9 win over visiting Navy Tuesday. The victory improves the Stags to 2-0 on the year, while the Midshipmen fall to 2-1.

Snow netted all of his game-high four goals in a final quarter that saw 11 of the games 19 goals scored.  Sam Jones gave Navy an 8-7 edge with his only goal of the game, with 6:23 to play, 8-7.  Snow struck for the next pair of goals, evening the score with an unassisted tally with 5:04 to play and putting Fairfield in front 9-8 with 3:56 remaining.  Gabe Voumard scored with 83 ticks left on the clock to tie the score 9-9.

Navy won the ensuing face-off and took two shots, the second of which was saved by Jack Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) with 47 seconds remaining.  The Stags cleared successfully and the ball found its way to Jordan Greenfield (Dover, Mass.) who fed Snow for the decisive tally.

Murphy finished with 14 saves for the Stags, including four in the fourth quarter, while also picking up a game-high seven ground balls.  Nolan Hickey stopped 15 shots for the Midshipmen, with four ground balls in the game.

The first quarter was a defensive show, with both goalkeepers stopping four of the opponent's seven shots in the period.  Navy got on the board first with a Pat Durkin goal with 42 seconds remaining in the period.  The Stags wasted no time in answering as Bryan Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up a deflected pass and put it into the back of the net 14 seconds later.

That tally started a 3-0 run for the Stags as Greenfield found the back of the net four minutes into the second quarter and Nick Guida (Chatham, N.J.) scored four minutes later to give the Stags a 3-1 edge.  Jay Mann scored 38 seconds later for the Midshipmen as they outscored Fairfield 3-1 to close the half and send the score to the break knotted 4-4.

Neither offense was able to break through in the third period, combining for 17 shots and six saves, but just eight turnovers.  It didn't take long for the offenses to get going in the fourth quarter however, as Tucker Hall gave Navy a 5-4 edge 34 seconds into the stanza.  Fairfield promptly answered, with Greenfield scoring off the ensuing face-off, second seconds later, to tie the score 5-5.  Snow scored his first of the afternoon at the 13:06 mark to put Fairfield ahead, 6-5.

It was the first of four lead changes in the fourth quarter, as Voumard scored consecutive goals for Navy, 9:21 and 8:46, to put the Midshipmen back in front, 7-6. Eric Warden (Glen Mills, Pa) tied the score off a Greenfield pass at 7:07, but that score lasted just 44 seconds until the Jones goal, which began Snows onslaught.

Greenfield finished with four points in the game, two goals and two assists, while Guida and TJ Neubauer (Glen Arm, Md.) both had a goal and an assist.

Fairfield, which has now won eight consecutive one-goal games dating back to the 2011 season, finished  with only 13 turnovers, to the 18 of Navy. The Stags had 12 caused turnovers in the game, led by four from Toby Armour (New Haven, Conn.). Navy had a 39-35 advantage in ground balls and went 11-21 at the face-off X. Louis DiGiacomo (Norwalk, Conn.) took all the face-offs for the Stags, while Evan McGoogan was a team-best 5-9 for the Midshipmen.
