Mount Scores Two in Final Minutes to Beat Bucknell

from press release

EMMITSBURG, Md. — Mount St. Mary's scored a pair of late goals to stun No. 18 Bucknell, 12-11, on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.

Andrew Scalley tied the game with 1:35 left, and Cody Lehrer scored the game-winner 15 seconds later to propel the Mountaineers to their fifth all-time win over a ranked opponent.

Senior Bryant Schmidt provided the Mount with the chance to tie when he caused a turnover near midfield, grabbed the ground ball, and found Scalley open to the left of the cage. Scalley buried the shot to even the score at 11-11 with 1:35 left.

The Mount's Jon Marsalese won the ensuing face-off, and got the ball to Scalley. The senior was found Lehrer open about 10 yards in front of the cage. Lehrer ripped the shot past Bucknell's goalie for the game-winner.

The Bison (1-1) had a pair of chances in the final seconds to even the score, but missed the cage on both shots.

Scalley finished with eight points in the game on three goals and five assists. Brett Schmidt added two goals and five assists while Lehrer added a four-goal effort for the Mountaineers. Goalkeeper Adam Borgogelli made 13 saves in his first collegiate start.

Todd Heritage had four goals for Bucknell while David Dickson added three assists. Sean Doyle, Peter Burke and Chase Bailey also had a pair of goals in the loss.

Trailing 7-4 at the half, the Mount (1-1) outscored Bucknell, 5-1, in the third quarter to take a 9-8 advantage. A three-goal barrage in a span of 1:28 evened the score at 7-7 with 10:53 left in the third.

Lehrer started the streak with his second goal of the game, converting a pass from Brett Schmidt. Just under a minute later, Schmidt found Alex Paroda wide open, and the freshman was able to beat Bucknell goalkeeper Kyle Feene to cut the deficit to one. Bryant Schmidt scored just 18 seconds later on a pass from Scalley to even the score, and chase Feeney from the game.

Lehrer gave the Mount an 8-7 advantage with 3:46 left in the third with his third goal of the game. It was also the 100th career goal for Lehrer, who is the 11th player in Mount history to reach the 100-career goal plateau.

Bucknell's Heritage tied the game at 8-8, but Brett Schmidt's man-up goal with 1:38 remaining in the quarter gave the Mount a one-goal advantage.

Scalley notched his second goal of the game with a wrap-around score with 13:08 left to push the Mount lead to 10-8. Bucknell, however, rattled off the next three goals to take an 11-10 advantage.

Burke started the streak when he stole a clearing attempt, raced from midfield, and beat Borogogelli to make it 10-9. Heritage completed a hat trick just over a minute later to even the score at 10-10 with 8:19 left. Bucknell took the lead on a Chase Bailey goal with 3:45 on the clock, setting up the Mount's exciting finish.

The win was the first for Mount St. Mary's in 14 all-time meetings with Bucknell. It is also the fifth all-time win over a ranked opponent for the Mount, with all five coming since 2010.

The Mount is back in action on Saturday, February 23, with a 12:00 p.m. home game against Delaware.
