Jacksonville's Second Season Its First in MAAC

from press release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- On the heels of an impressive inaugural season, the JU men's lacrosse team will head into 2011 with a challenging schedule and the goal of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in its first year of membership.

The Dolphins' season will be highlighted with a game against Georgetown at EverBank Field in the 'Sunshine Classic' and showdowns with Denver and Air Force in the Denver Invitational Tournament.

"We are excited to announce our 2011 schedule," said JU head coach Matt Kerwick. "Once again, we will compete against some of the best programs in collegiate lacrosse. Our out of league competition will prepare us for the rigors of the MAAC schedule at the end of the season. Hopefully, we will earn the right to compete the first weekend of May at Canisius while fighting for a NCAA tournament bid.

"It will also be a great experience for our student-athletes to kick off the season against one of the top programs in the country, Georgetown, at EverBank Field, the home of the Jaguars."

After facing Georgetown to start the season on Feb. 20, the Dolphins will travel to Macon, Ga. to take on first-year program Mercer on Feb. 23. The team will take a nine-day break from official play before flying to Denver to play Denver (March 5) and Air Force (March 6).

Three non-conference rematches from last year will be next on tap for JU as Robert Morris will head to Jacksonville on March 9 with the Dolphins then heading north to square off against Mount St. Mary's (March 13) and Rutgers (March 15).

MAAC play will open with the green and gold making a cold trip up to Canisius on March 19 with the Dolphins facing Detroit Mercy a week later at home on March 26. Manhattan will host JU on April 2 before a pair of home games for the Dolphins against Siena (April 9) and Marist (April 16).

JU will close out conference play at VMI on April 24 and will then host Duke in the final game of the season on April 30.

The MAAC Tournament will be held on the campus of Canisius on May 6-8 and the top four teams in the conference will participate.
