Stony Brook to Be Tested by Cornell and Virginia, Among Others

from press release

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Stony Brook men's lacrosse coach Rick Sowell announced the Seawolves' 12-game, regular-season schedule for the 2011 season on Wednesday. The Seawolves will face three teams that made the 2010 NCAA Tournament, including Virginia and Cornell, which advanced to the Final Four.

"I think our team is looking forward to facing a challenging schedule," Sowell said. "Our non-conference schedule with teams like Virginia, Delaware, Towson, Cornell and Bryant will prepare us for the America East Conference which is getting better each and every year."

Stony Brook, which enters the preseason ranked eighth by Inside Lacrosse, opens the season at home against Virginia on February 26. The Seawolves and Cavaliers played one of the most exciting tournament games last season, won by Virginia, 10-9, before a sold-out crowd of more than 10,000 fans at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The following week gives Stony Brook a tough road game at Marist before hosting Delaware on March 12. Road games at St. John's (March 15) and Towson (March 19) set up a three-game homestand against the Big Red (March 22), Bryant (March 26) and the America East opener against UMBC on April 2.

After traveling to face Hartford on April 9, Stony Brook faces in-state rivals Binghamton (April 16) and Albany (April 23) at home. The regular season concludes at Vermont on April 30.

The America East Championship will be on Wednesday, May 4, with the final on May 7.

Stony Brook returns one of the nation's leading offenses, led by first-team All-American Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia), who totaled 77 points (51 goals, 26 assists) last season. Seniors Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia), Tom Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Adam Rand (Niantic, Conn.) also will lead a potent attack.
