St. John's Faces Nationally-Ranked Foes
from press release
The Red Storm men's lacrosse team will enter the 2011 season with the strongest schedule in the recent history of the program. On Monday, the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook released its annual Division I Preseason Top 20 Media and Coaches Polls which featured a program-record eight teams that appear on the Red Storm 2011 schedule. Four of the ranked opponents placed in the top 10 of the poll, also marking a new program record.
The media poll, which serves as the first official ranking of the season, tabbed BIG EAST foe Syracuse as the top team in the nation heading into the 2011 campaign. Last year's national runner-up and conference opponent, Notre Dame, was ranked seventh, while Long Island rivals Stony Brook and Hofstra came in eighth and ninth, respectively.
Red Storm opponents Yale, Georgetown and Drexel rounded out the bottom of the Top 20 Media Poll, while BIG EAST opponent Villanova was ranked in the Coaches Poll.
Five of the Red Storm's six home games come against teams sporting national rankings, the first time that St. John's has boasted that sort of schedule in head coach Jason Miller's five seasons at the helm. St. John's will also take on Rutgers in the Konica Minolta Big City Classic in April at New Meadowlands Stadium.
St. John's will be led by senior defensemen Mike Sherry and Dan Cremens, who were selected as team captains this fall. The team returns to practice in January.
