Vermont Releases Men's Lax Schedule

from press release

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont men's lacrosse team announced its 2011 schedule today. The Catamounts will face three NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including Final Four participant Virginia. Vermont will also meet Denver and America East counterpart Stony Brook, who are each coming off NCAA appearances.

"I am excited to once again have a very challenging schedule," said Vermont head coach Ryan Curtis. "As we prepare to compete for a conference championship, I feel it is extremely important to see the best competition possible out of conference first. We have accomplished that goal and will be pushed every week to be our best."

The Catamounts open the season at home when they host Colgate on February 20. Vermont will then head west for a pair of road games at Air Force (Feb. 25) and Denver (Feb. 27). The Pioneers went 12-5 last season and were ranked ninth in the nation before falling to Stony Brook in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Vermont returns home for a game vs. Bryant on March 5, before playing four of its next five on the road. The Bulldogs finished 12-5 last year after ending the season winning six of their last seven. The Cats open their road swing with a trip to Curtis' alma mater, Virginia on March 8. The Cavaliers finished last season 16-2 after entering the NCAA Tournament as the top seed, before falling in the semifinals to Duke 14-13.

Vermont will also face Fairfield (March 15) and Brown (March 26) on the road, with a home date vs. St. John's (March 19) sandwiched in between, before opening America East action at Binghamton on April 2.

The Cats kick-off a three-game homestand on April 5 when they host Holy Cross. Moulton Winder Field will also be the site for conference clashes against Albany (April 10) and Hartford (April 16). Vermont is at Dartmouth (April 19) and UMBC (April 23) before wrapping up the regular season at home against Stony Brook, the reigning America East champions, on April 30. The Seawolves went 13-4 overall last season and a perfect 5-0 in conference play, as they advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals before falling to Virginia.

The 2011 America East Semifinals will take place on May 4, with the championship game scheduled for May 7. The top four teams in the league standings will qualify for the tournament that will be hosted by the highest seed.

The Catamounts will be looking to advance to the America East Tournament for a second straight season, after finishing 3-13 last year and falling to Stony Brook in the conference semifinals.
